🚧 AIA Saved By The Seawall
The buried seawall project along AIA in Ormond-By-The-Sea and Flagler has already proved its worth as shown in the photo above, protecting A!A from the relentless battering of the heavy seas the past days. Had the new seawall not been in place it’s almost certain the roadway would have been breached again.
Now the question is what to do going forward. Clearly the mere placement of more sand is not going to be the answer. A much more robust barrier with large granite slabs or rip-rap is going to be needed. Time for the engineers to move to Plan B.

🏝️ Jetty Walkway Washed Out — Again
High tides and strong surf over the weekend destroyed the wooden portion of the Ponce Inlet jetty connector, leaving just the concrete section standing. The structure has been off‑limits since damage first occurred during Hurricane Imelda, and county officials say it had only recently been restored.
Local residents expressed sadness and frustration over seeing a familiar family spot so badly damaged again. “We walked down there … the pier is completely flipped upside down … just gone,” said Port Orange resident Monika Greenslate. Others noted the repeated nature of the damage — storms, high tides, and hurricanes have battered the jetty over the years.
County officials had planned to extend the concrete deck, but that work requires Army Corps of Engineers approval. Until then, the walkway served only as a temporary wooden link.
Beach safety officials, meanwhile, are warning visitors about abundant seaweed blown ashore — its presence plays a role in protecting dunes and retaining sand. Despite the dramatic damage, no water rescues were reported over the weekend, though hazardous surf conditions remain.

🧴 Hazardous Waste Collection Events Coming Up
Volusia County will host two free collection events later this month for residents to safely dispose of household hazardous materials. The first is Friday, Oct. 24 (8 a.m.–noon) at Ormond Beach Public Works, and the second is Saturday, Oct. 25 (same hours) at New Smyrna Beach Public Works.
Accepted items include old paint, solvents, batteries, motor oil, pool chemicals, pesticides, and up to 10 fluorescent lamps — so long as they’re unmixed. Insulin needles in approved containers are accepted, though the containers won’t be returned. Businesses aren’t eligible.
To maintain safety and efficiency, traffic will flow in one direction and residents must remain in their vehicles. Proof of Volusia County residency (like a driver’s license) is required.
If you can’t attend, you can still drop off hazardous waste year‑round at Tomoka Landfill in Port Orange and the West Volusia Transfer Station in DeLand. Both sites also offer paint exchange and electronic recycling.

🌊 Beaches Closed Due to Dangerous Surf
Though skies are sunny and temperatures inviting, Volusia County officials have issued a strict no‑swim order. As of Oct. 11, double‑red flags are flying along the coastline, banning water entry due to dangerous surf, rip currents, debris, and elevated sea levels.
The National Weather Service also warns of possible coastal flooding, with a combination of high tides, long‑period swells, and elevated seas heightening risk.
This closure follows recent storm and tidal activity that caused damage including the jetty washout in Ponce Inlet. County crews will begin debris removal once conditions allow.
Officials remind beachgoers not to remove seaweed, which helps trap sand and supports dune recovery. Meanwhile, beach driving access may remain limited until conditions improve. Visitors can monitor real‑time updates via the Volusia Beaches app.

“Ceviche28” Brings Peruvian-Mexican Flair to Ormond Beach (Frida’s Re-born) 🌮🐟
Ormond Beach food lovers, get ready for something truly special! The father-and-son duo of Pedro and Peter Navarez have opened Ceviche28, a fresh new fusion concept blending the bold, colorful flavors of Peru and Mexico right in the heart of town.

If the name sounds familiar, that’s because Pedro made waves with his original Ceviche28 in Vero Beach — a hit known for its creative seafood and vibrant dishes. Now, he’s brought that same energy north to 195 W. Granada Blvd., in the former Frida’s location. And yes, Pedro was also the owner behind Frida’s and the still popular Agave Fresh Mex in Ormond Beach. This time, he and Peter are serving up something entirely new, while still honoring their family’s signature flair for great food and warm hospitality.

The menu at Ceviche28 is a celebration of fresh ingredients and bold combinations — from zesty ceviches to sizzling chicken and steak plates that burst with flavor. Pair your meal with a handcrafted cocktail from the full bar, and enjoy a perfect evening on the inviting outdoor patio.

Pedro and Peter invite all lovers of Mexican and Latin cuisine to stop by, say hello, and discover their unique spin on fusion dining. Whether you’re in the mood for a quick bite, a relaxed dinner, or a night out with friends, Ceviche28 is the place to be.

Come hungry, leave smiling — and see why everyone’s talking about Ormond’s newest taste sensation! And, show this Business Spotlight article to the server on your phone and receive 1 free House Margarita with your entre’ when 2 people are dining. Offer expires 10/31/25
