🐎 No horses on the beach in Ormond‑by‑the‑Sea: Councilman pulls motion

The idea of allowing horses on a section of beach in Ormond‑by‑the‑Sea has been put on hold after Troy Kent, a county councilman in Volusia County, withdrew his motion. In August the council had asked staff to explore a six‑month trial for horseback access along a 9‑mile stretch of beach — with two proposed areas: Al Weeks North Shore Park (in Ormond‑by‑the‑Sea) or the Neptune Avenue beach access, which would require trailers to cross A1A.
Kent had initially favoued the Al Weeks location but, after reviewing the logistics and hearing mostly negative feedback from constituents, he said the site was “not feasible.” The plan would have required eliminating 19 parking spaces to make space for two horse trailer spots. Kent said he still likes the idea of beach rides — “the location is wrong,” he concluded.
This marks a shift in momentum for the beach‑equestrian proposal, signaling that local infrastructure and community reception can trump the appeal of novelty.

🎈 Small talk, big support: Speech‑language pathologists launch “Social Seeds” play‑group

In Ormond Beach, a new initiative is sprouting to support young children with language‑development needs and their caregivers. Two speech‑language pathologists, Sara Ambrosio and Kara Heckerman, have teamed up to launch Social Seeds — a therapeutic play group for children (typically ages 2‑4) that also offers caregiver support. The sessions are held at the Nova Community Center (inside the Nova Rec space) certain Wednesdays at 4:45 p.m. The cost is $25 per session, and once a month there’s a free caregiver support meet‑up. The next play‑group date is Nov. 5 and registration is via https://forms.gle/PWEy68N2zUK1bSVH7.

Ambrosio and Heckerman designed the group to offer two simultaneous benefits: children get to build social‑play skills in a supportive setting, while caregivers meet peers, share stories, and learn strategies to support early language at home. One parent, Melody Foley, reported seeing her 3‑year‑old daughter, who is speech‑delayed, begin to engage more in the group — a milestone for them.
The vibe is community‑first and inclusive: kids with diagnoses such as autism or developmental delays, as well as children simply needing extra support, are welcome. For the caregivers especially, the monthly meet‑ups are proving to be an unexpected lifeline of connection and encouragement.

🍎 SNAP benefit delays looming: What Florida recipients need to know

A potential federal government shutdown is putting 2.8 million Floridians’ benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) at risk of delay come November. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has warned that if funding lapses past Nov. 1, payments scheduled for November will not be disbursed until federal funding is restored. October benefits are unaffected and any existing EBT‑card balance remains usable.
In Florida, SNAP is managed by the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF). The state’s site confirms benefits may not arrive if the shutdown continues. Newly approved applicants or those renewing now would still get notifications of eligibility, but not the funds until it’s sorted.

Eligibility rules remain in place (income caps, age/work‑requirements, asset limits) and beneficiaries may buy approved foods — but non‑food items like paper goods or grooming supplies are not SNAP‑eligible. The takeaway: keep an eye on your EBT balance (you can check at ebtEDGE.com) and plan for possible delay or disruption in November.

Beachside Dog Grooming Reopens with a Fresh Look and a Beachside Flair

After more than a decade of keeping local pups polished and pampered in Ormond-By-The-Sea,, Beachside Dog Grooming has a brand-new home at 1468 Ocean Shore Boulevard. Owner Carolyn Hart, a professional groomer with more than 23 years of experience, says the move marks a fresh chapter for the beloved business — one that combines a brighter, more visible location with room to grow.

Hart began her grooming career over two decades ago, working for other salons before striking out on her own. “I groomed for about twelve years before opening my own shop,” she said. “It’s just something I’ve always loved — working with animals, making them look and feel their best.” For the last eleven years, she operated Beachside Dog Grooming in a tucked-away location that many customers had trouble finding. When that building was sold, Hart began searching immediately for a new spot — and the timing worked out perfectly.

Our Reception Area

The move wasn’t without hurdles. “The county had trouble figuring out how to permit the space,” Hart explained, noting that the previous tenant, Seadrift, had combined several units into one. “It delayed things for a couple of months, but we finally got through it.” Despite the setback, Hart was able to keep her entire team together — three groomers and a bather — and everyone is excited about the salon’s relaunch.

Bathing and Drying Station

The new shop offers expanded grooming space, fresh décor, and plenty of natural light. It also provides the visibility Hart had always wanted. “People used to say, ‘I drive by your old place all the time and never knew you were there,’” she said. “Now, they can’t miss us!”

Grooming Sadie

Looking ahead, Hart plans to expand Beachside Dog Grooming’s offerings with a small retail area and a fun new feature she calls the Tiki Treat Bar — a cheerful setup where customers can fill bags with an assortment of dog treats. The shop will also carry collars, leashes, food, bowls, and other pet essentials.

“It’s been a long road getting here,” Hart said with a smile, “but it feels great to be back — bigger, better, and ready to keep Ormond’s dogs looking fabulous on the beachside.”

You can visit Beachside’s Facebook Page to see the latest happenings. If your fur-baby needs a great grooming call Carolyn at 386-238-9986. Mention Ormond Local Pulse when you call for a special discount.
