🏅 Honoring Revolutionary Spirit: Medals for Modern Patriots

At their October chapter meeting, the Daytona-Ormond Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution handed out some serious historical hardware. Four local members were awarded the Gold 250th Anniversary Medal — a recognition reserved for those who lead and participate in public events that celebrate and honor the heroes of the American Revolution.

The medal recipients were Bill Elder and Cara Elder of DeLand, Kelly Crumley of Ponce Inlet, and William Ashmore of Ormond Beach. Their dedication to keeping Revolutionary history alive earned them top honors from the chapter.

The evening also welcomed a new face into the fold — Ryan Estes of Port Orange — who boasts a notable lineage as a descendant of John Hart, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Talk about historic roots!

🌠 Remembering Lowell Lohman: A Legacy of Giving

Ormond Beach and the broader Volusia community are mourning the loss of Lowell Lohman, a well-known businessman and philanthropist, who passed away at 80. While his entrepreneurial spirit led him to own over 60 companies — including the iconic Lohman Funeral Homes — it's his generous heart that truly defined his legacy.

Alongside his wife, Nancy, Lohman invested deeply in the community: $2.5 million for the planetarium at the Museum of Arts & Sciences, $1 million each to the Halifax Humane Society and Council on Aging, plus countless other charitable gifts. The Lohmans' influence reached far beyond business, lighting the way for future generations through education, wellness, and support.

His passing marks the end of a remarkable era, but his legacy lives on in the many lives he touched and the causes he championed.

💖 Terry’s Light Shines Bright in the Fight Against Cancer

When a community rallies around a friend, incredible things happen. Just ask Ormond residents Tara Hoppe Fowinkle and Kathy Shanahan, whose virtual team for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer raised over $10,000 in honor of their friend, Terry Gorski.

Gorski, a beloved neighbor battling stage 4 metastatic breast cancer, has been a constant source of support — especially when Fowinkle faced her own diagnosis in 2021. That unwavering kindness inspired a neighborhood effort that included a golf cart parade, raffle, and a heartfelt lunch — all cooked by Gorski herself.

Their team, Golden Warriors of Ormond Beach, ranked second nationally among virtual teams. With plans to continue the event annually, this community proves that love, resilience, and pink golf carts can make a real difference.

🎃 Costumes and Candy: A Spooktacular Night at The Casements

Halloween fun was in full swing at The Casements as Realty Pro Assured hosted its annual Community Appreciation Night trunk-or-treat event. The evening was packed with family-friendly festivities, including a costume contest, mystery box challenge, and a guessing game involving a glass pumpkin brimming with candy corn.

Guests enjoyed free treats like hot dogs, cotton candy, snow cones, and water. The night capped off with a cozy screening of "Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice" courtesy of the city’s Movies on the Halifax series.

If there was ever a way to mix frights and delights, this community celebration nailed it.
