🐾 Penny’s Homecoming: Lost Dog Reunited After 5 Years
A story straight out of a family film played out in DeLand, where a small dog, later identified as Penny, was rescued from traffic and lovingly sheltered by residents Briana Rideout and Daniel Lenoci. After days of searching for her owner with no luck, they turned to Volusia County Animal Services for help. That’s when things took a surprising turn.
A quick microchip scan revealed Penny belonged to someone in Mississippi—Christy Taylor, who had lost her dog over five years ago. Penny had vanished from her backyard and, somehow, found her way to Florida. As soon as Taylor was contacted and Penny heard her name, her tail started wagging.
Taylor hopped on a flight to Florida and was reunited with her long-lost pup in an emotional reunion filled with happy tears and furry hugs. Penny is now back on the road home to Mississippi, ready to settle in with her new four-legged siblings.
This incredible reunion underscores the power of microchipping. “We see time and again how this simple tool can turn heartbreak into joy,” said Animal Services Director Angela Miedema.

🛒 Fresh Market News: Sprouts Coming to Daytona in 2026
While Daytona Beach residents eagerly await news of the Trader Joe’s opening at Tanger Outlets, another health-conscious grocery chain has confirmed its debut. Sprouts Farmers Market will open its doors in 2026, bringing fresh, organic, and specialty items to 1591 N. Williamson Blvd., just across from the outlets.
Although there’s no exact grand opening date yet, this announcement adds to the growing excitement over new shopping options in the area. The Sprouts location is part of a bustling plaza just west of LPGA Boulevard, positioning it perfectly for locals and shoppers looking to avoid the grocery store status quo.
Until opening day, residents will have to keep their eyes peeled for updates from both Sprouts and Trader Joe’s, who are staying mum on dates—but very much in the mix for Daytona’s grocery scene.

🍽️ Food Support Expands Amid SNAP Uncertainty
As a federal shutdown looms, more than 42 million Americans—including nearly 3 million Floridians—are at risk of losing access to critical food aid through SNAP and WIC. While a last-minute court ruling may delay cuts, uncertainty remains high.
In response, a wave of businesses is stepping up. Winn-Dixie’s parent company, Southeastern Grocers, pledged $100,000 to Feeding America and is launching affordable meal deals, free delivery for SNAP recipients, and local store donations starting Nov. 1.
DoorDash, Instacart, and Gopuff are also offering perks—from waived delivery fees to $50 in free groceries. Restaurants such as Chicken Salad Chick, Donatos Pizza, and Florida Boy Burger Co. are dishing out free or deeply discounted meals for children and SNAP recipients.
This community-driven response is providing much-needed relief as food insecurity grows. With 12.7% of Florida’s population receiving SNAP and over 428,000 on WIC, these efforts are a lifeline for families navigating this uncertain chapter.
