💧 Water Woes and Hopes in Ormond Beach

Ormond Beach is aiming to tap into state funds for two key infrastructure projects focused on water quality and resiliency, totaling $1.375 million in requests. The city is seeking $750,000 to install a second reclaimed water main under the Halifax River and $625,000 to replace an aging sanitary sewer force main near Granada Boulevard. These projects will improve reclaimed water delivery on the beachside and upgrade infrastructure dating back to 1981.

While those items made it to the city's legislative action list for 2026, some commissioners are wondering if it's time to fast-track stormwater mitigation, particularly for the flood-prone Cumberland Avenue area. Assistant City Manager Shawn Finley said getting shovel-ready is key for future funding, and discussions with the county's Transform386 program are already underway.

The commission may add more projects before the week is out, depending on feasibility — and the tightening purse strings in Tallahassee.

🚗 ParkVolusia Surpasses Revenue Expectations

Volusia County’s new ParkVolusia program has delivered some unexpected good news: it’s outpacing revenue forecasts. Initially expected to bring in just under $3 million, off-beach parking has now generated $3.8 million for the 2025 fiscal year. Combine that with on-beach parking revenues, and the county is looking at a solid $10 million.

The program, launched in January, charges visitors $20 per day or $100 annually, while residents and disabled permit holders park for free. With more than 133,000 daily passes sold and over 44,000 citations issued (not all valid), ParkVolusia has seen plenty of use — and a few kinks. But County Councilman Troy Kent praised staff and vendors for ironing things out.

Council voted to continue key measures, like free resident beach passes and payment plans for citations, while setting a three-year re-verification period for pass renewals.

✈️ Government Shutdown Grounds Confidence, Not Flights — Yet

As the federal shutdown stretches into record-breaking territory, Florida travelers are feeling the tension — but not too many delays just yet. Despite air traffic controllers and TSA agents working unpaid since October 1, airports like Orlando (MCO), Sanford (SFB), and Daytona Beach (DAB) have remained mostly on schedule.

As of Nov. 5, Orlando reported 11 delays and one cancellation, while Sanford and Daytona had just one delay between them. Still, officials warn the stress on essential aviation workers is mounting. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy assured the public that flying remains safe, but noted that flight volume may be reduced as staffing is stretched thin.

Travelers are advised to arrive 2–2.5 hours early and pack extra patience. If your flight gets canceled due to shutdown-related staffing shortages, you’re entitled to a full refund — just don’t expect airlines to offer compensation beyond that.
