🥫 Volusia Delivers Food, Hope, and Relief
Volusia County took a big step toward addressing food insecurity by distributing over 1,800 boxes of groceries to residents in need. In partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, the county hosted two large community food events at Calvary Christian Church Dream Center in New Smyrna Beach and Hope Place in Daytona Beach.
Thanks to Community Services Block Grant funding—awarded as part of Hurricane Ian recovery efforts—each box was packed with enough goods to feed a family of four for up to a week. That’s over 37,000 pounds of food going directly to locals, at no cost. Alongside the headline events, additional smaller-scale distributions and pantry restocks were made possible to extend the support even further.
This initiative reflects the county’s ongoing commitment to resilience and recovery, ensuring no table goes empty in the wake of natural disasters. With these efforts, Volusia is not only helping residents today but laying a stronger foundation for food security tomorrow.

🧾 Ormond Beach Begins a Government DOGE
Ormond Beach is getting introspective—through a state-encouraged self-audit known as DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency). At a recent workshop, city commissioners and the Budget Advisory Board explored cost-saving opportunities, ranging from travel policies to vehicle leasing and even questioning the value of events like the State of the City.
The initiative stems from a statewide effort to curb unnecessary government spending, kicked off by a gubernatorial executive order earlier this year. Commissioner Travis Sargent championed the idea, calling for streamlined operations over flashy catchphrases like “rollback rates.” City staff will now prepare a comprehensive DOGE report to be unveiled in early 2026, just ahead of budget season.
Beyond bean-counting, the commission is also considering forming a new technology advisory board focused on how artificial intelligence could optimize operations. From capital project budgeting to possibly ditching take-home vehicles, Ormond Beach seems ready to swap red tape for redirection.

🐾 Goodbye to Wednesday, Flagler’s Four-Legged Surf Legend
Flagler Beach is mourning the loss of a pint-sized local hero with a big splash: Wednesday the surfing Chihuahua. Known as the founding “paw” of the Hang 8 Dog Surfing Extravaganza, Wednesday passed away this week after a battle with congestive heart failure.
Owned by City Commissioner Eric Cooley, Wednesday was more than just a novelty act—she was a community mascot, riding waves in her red lifejacket and encouraging pet owners to get out and try something new with their furry friends. Her fearless spirit helped turn Hang 8 from a quirky local event into a nationally recognized tradition.
She may have stood small, but her legacy looms large. Wednesday’s wave-riding adventures brought smiles, media buzz, and a new appreciation for canine athleticism to Flagler County and beyond. In honor of her memory, the Hang 8 team is encouraging everyone to rescue a dog—because, as Wednesday proved, they might just take you on the ride of your life.
