🇺🇸 Veterans Day Ceremonies & Parades

Volusia and Flagler counties are showing up in full force this week to honor military service members. Several events will mark Veterans Day, beginning with a 10 a.m. ceremony at Veterans Memorial Plaza, 125 E. Orange Ave., Daytona Beach. Hosted by the Military Officers Association of America Halifax Area Chapter and the Vietnam Veterans of America, this event will include a Toys for Tots collection—bring an unwrapped toy if you'd like to help local kids.

At the same time, 10 a.m., the Veterans Day Parade kicks off in Bunnell, starting at City Hall (200 S. Church St.) and moving down East Moody Blvd. to the Flagler County Courthouse (1769 E. Moody Blvd.). After the parade, a ceremony will be held in front of the Government Services Building.

Later in the morning, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Ormond Memorial Art Museum (78 E. Granada Blvd.) hosts its annual tribute in the parking lot. Ormond Beach City Commissioner and Marine Corps veteran Travis Sargent will speak, and entertainment includes the Bombshell Sirens, the LPE Jazz Trio, comedian Carmen Vallone, and the Daytona Beach Choral Society.

Finally, from 12 to 3 p.m., VFW Post 8696 (47 Old Kings Road, Palm Coast) will hold a flag ceremony, provide free haircuts for veterans, host a vendor fair, and offer lunch from Firehouse Subs. The event is open to the public.

🥫 3,500 Families Helped in Massive SNAP Food Drive

A weekend food drive organized by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office and the Jewish Federation of Volusia and Flagler Counties served over 3,500 families in Volusia County—and did it with just days of planning. Sheriff Mike Chitwood and Rabbi Rob Lennick led the effort, which saw an estimated 200,000 to 300,000 pounds of food donated and distributed from a staging area at Daytona International Speedway on Nov. 8.

More than 300 volunteers showed up to help, from Cub Scouts and National Honor Society students to residents moved by the need. The event was sparked by the recent federal uncertainty surrounding SNAP benefits, which threatened to leave many local families without assistance.

Donors also gave enough to supply 500 grocery gift cards, which ran out within an hour. Sheriff Chitwood noted the outpouring of support demonstrated that “feeding people is not about ideology.” Rabbi Lennick called the event a “miracle,” emphasizing the power of unity and compassion.

As cars lined up along West International Speedway Boulevard, the community came together in a true grassroots show of care—and bags of groceries.

🧥 Cold Weather Shelters Open for Chilly Nights

With temperatures dipping into the 30s this week, cold weather shelters are opening up across Volusia and Flagler counties. In Volusia County, residents in need can head to The Bridge, located at 421 S. Palmetto Ave., DeLand. The shelter is confirmed to be open on both Monday and Tuesday nights, with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. and closing the next morning at 8:00 a.m.

The shelter will provide breakfast, as well as food, water, and bedding to those seeking warmth and safety. The Neighborhood Center, which manages the shelter, can be contacted at (386) 734-8120 ext. 601 for further assistance.

This action is part of an annual safety net effort to make sure no one is left out in the cold as winter temperatures begin to make their first appearance in Central Florida.

🛒 Trader Joe’s Opens Friday in Daytona

Grocery fans, rejoice: Trader Joe’s is finally opening its doors in Daytona Beach! The ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for Friday, Nov. 14 at 9 a.m., and the store is located in Tomoka Town Center on Cornerstone Boulevard, near LPGA and Williamson Boulevards—just down the road from Bucee’s and Tanger Outlets. It was previously expected to open yesterday.

The opening is perfectly timed for holiday grocery shopping, especially for those eager to stock up on Trader Joe’s seasonal staples. Daytona’s store is one of about a dozen new Trader Joe’s to open this year, with more still to come—including one in Melbourne later in 2025.

With its cult-favorite snacks, affordable produce, and friendly vibe, Trader Joe’s is sure to become a welcome staple in local grocery runs.
