🐋 On The Water? Slow Down for Manatees

It’s Manatee Awareness Month, and Florida’s beloved sea cows are on the move again. As water temperatures drop, manatees begin migrating to warmer waters across the state—and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) wants everyone on the water to be on high alert.

Despite their hefty size, manatees can be surprisingly hard to spot. That’s why the FWC is urging boaters to wear polarized sunglasses, go slow, and obey all manatee protection zones, especially during colder months when the risk of boat strikes increases. These zones are marked with signs, and maps are available at MyFWC.com/mpz.

FWC officers will be patrolling state waters, ensuring boaters are following speed regulations, and offering education along the way. If you see a manatee in distress, call (888) 404-3922—don’t attempt a DIY rescue.

To support manatee conservation, consider donating for a decal or grabbing a manatee license plate. They’re cute, they’re iconic, and the money helps fund rescue and research programs.

🚀 100 Launches and Counting

The Space Coast is officially in overdrive. SpaceX’s recent Starlink mission marked the 100th launch of 2025, a milestone that highlights just how rapidly Florida’s space industry is expanding.

Launched on a Falcon 9 rocket—whose first stage had flown a staggering 23 times—the mission deployed nearly 30 satellites and then stuck the landing on the “Just Read the Instructions” droneship. Experts credit the historic pace to reusable rocket technology, which allows boosters to be flown multiple times (with a goal of up to 40 uses).

According to Dr. Ken Kremer of Space UpClose, the region isn’t just launching rockets—it’s launching an economic boom. With more commercial space firms setting up shop, the demand for talent and infrastructure is rising. Last week, two launches were spaced just 3.5 hours apart—a clear sign that liftoff is the new normal on Florida’s east coast.

If the trend continues, 2025 could finish with even more launches and plenty of jobs to match.

🍎 Volusia Teachers See Salary Boost

It’s a win—mostly—for teachers in Volusia County. The School Board has ratified a new agreement with the teachers’ union, raising the base salary to $50,000 and offering a 2% cost-of-living adjustment for teachers who’ve been on the job at least a year.

The deal, however, came with mixed feelings. Only 79% of union members approved it—one of the lowest ratifications union president Elizabeth Albert has seen. In four schools, the deal wasn’t ratified at all, signaling ongoing frustrations, particularly around salary compression (where long-time teachers earn close to what new hires make).

The contract negotiations hit an impasse in October, with the union initially asking for a 4% raise, better maternity leave, and more bereavement days. Although some of those asks didn’t make it into the final agreement, the district is moving forward.

Teachers can expect to see the salary increase by January 31, with bonuses being paid even sooner. The agreement for support staff is next in line for ratification on December 4.
