🧜‍♀️ Salty Mermaid Marks Six Colorful Years

The Salty Mermaid Art Gallery and Studio in Ormond-by-the-Sea just turned six, and owner Penny Schumate celebrated the milestone with a splashy holiday party on November 15.

What began in 2019 as a coastal art boutique at 1546 Ocean Shore Blvd. has blossomed into a vibrant community hub, showcasing work from over 70 artists. At the anniversary bash, guests enjoyed live organ music by Wendy Burke, watched artist Linda Olsen paint in real time, and sampled a generous spread of food and drinks—all while elves (well, elf-costumed helpers) added a dash of festive fun.

Schumate expressed her gratitude on Facebook, saying, “We are sincerely grateful for every person who stopped in, shopped local, created art, shared a hug... This beautiful turnout was a true reminder of the love and community that surrounds The Salty Mermaid.”

Six years in, and The Salty Mermaid is still making waves.

🎖️Volusia Offers Holiday Help for Veterans

Volusia County is making sure local veterans feel the holiday spirit, too.

On December 8, the county’s Veterans Services Division will distribute 90 holiday food boxes to veteran families in need. Donated by the Volusia Basket Brigade, each box contains enough for a full holiday meal for six. Veterans must show proof of service and can pick up boxes starting at 9 a.m., first-come, first-served, at several locations including locally at 1845 Holsonback Drive in Daytona Beach.

“Our veterans have given so much to protect our freedom,” said Veterans Services Director Scott Olson. “It’s an honor to support them and their families during the holiday season.”

Veterans Services continues to assist military families with benefits and claims, providing vital help year-round—but especially when it matters most.

🛒 Aldi Brings Bargain Bonanza to Ormond

Aldi is opening its new Ormond Beach store on Thursday, December 18 at 353 West Granada Boulevard, taking over the old Winn-Dixie location.

The grand opening comes with a basketful of perks. The first 100 customers in line will get a “golden ticket” good for up to $100 in Aldi shopping, plus a reusable goodie bag. Shoppers can also enter a raffle for a $500 gift card over the weekend.

Aldi’s rise has been swift, with more than 2,600 U.S. locations and a growing fan base that swears by its no-frills, low-price, high-quality formula. With fresh produce, pantry staples, and even organic items at unbeatable prices—not to mention that quarter-for-a-cart quirk—the new Ormond Beach store is poised to be a local favorite.

With inflation on everyone's radar, Aldi’s timing couldn’t be better.

Get into the holiday spirit with an afternoon of Christmas classics. Bel Canto Singers under the direction of Dr. Adam Stich, will present beloved modern and classic Christmas songs. Tickets are available in advance for $20 or at the door for $25. For additional information visit BelCantoDaytona.org, email [email protected] or call 404-376-2737
