✈️ JetBlue Returns to Daytona: A Warm Welcome and New Horizons

JetBlue is back in Daytona Beach after a seven-year hiatus, launching daily nonstop flights to both New York City and Boston. The airline first touched down at Daytona Beach International Airport on December 4, welcomed with fanfare from local residents and officials alike. One Ormond Beach local even brought donuts to greet the crew—her son works for JetBlue and will now be flying home for the holidays with ease.

JetBlue’s departure in 2019 followed the end of a substantial incentive package. But this time, the airline is back with a lighter support plan—about $200,000 in marketing aid per route and a two-year waiver of select airport fees. The return is thanks to a persistent effort from airport staff and increased passenger traffic fueled by new routes from Avelo and Breeze Airways.

Daytona’s economic sky is looking sunny, with airport activity nearing 745,000 travelers this year—its highest since the ‘90s. For locals and snowbirds alike, the convenience of flying directly from the World’s Most Famous Beach just got a major upgrade.

👨‍⚖️ 135-Year Sentence for Former Volusia Teacher in Child Porn Case

A former private school teacher in Volusia County will spend the rest of his life behind bars after being sentenced to 135 years in prison. David Robert McKeown, 47, was convicted on 25 charges including child pornography possession and sexual abuse of an animal—a case that shocked the community.

The investigation began with a tip from Discord and revealed that McKeown used the school's WiFi at UBIC Academy to traffic illegal content. He also created videos of himself abusing a family pet. His charges included aggravated possession of child pornography and multiple counts of sexual offenses against animals.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier called the crimes “sick” and praised law enforcement for securing the lengthy sentence. In addition to prison time, McKeown will be permanently labeled a sexual offender and banned from owning animals.

This case underscores the seriousness with which Florida law enforcement is treating crimes against children and animals. It also serves as a reminder of the digital age’s double-edged sword—where online platforms can both expose and facilitate the worst of behaviors.

🌳 Volusia Forever Committee Sets Sights on Next Round of Conservation

The Volusia Forever Advisory Committee is gearing up for its next meeting on Friday, December 12, to evaluate land conservation applications for the 2025 cycle. Meeting at 9 a.m. in DeLand, the committee will first determine if the latest batch of properties meets eligibility standards before ranking already-approved ones.

Volusia Forever plays a key role in preserving natural lands across the county. With environmental resilience and land conservation top of mind, these decisions could have lasting impacts on local ecosystems and recreation areas.

Residents can tune into the meeting online or check out the agenda beforehand. As growth pressures continue to mount in Florida, initiatives like Volusia Forever ensure the region’s green spaces don’t get left behind.
