🥦 Sprouts Sets February Opening for Daytona Beach Location

Sprouts Farmers Market is about to plant its roots in Daytona Beach. The Phoenix-based upscale grocer confirmed it will open its first Volusia County store on February 27, 2026, at 1591 N. Williamson Blvd. And there’s more: a second store is already in the works for New Smyrna Beach, expected to debut in late 2026.

Known for its farmstand-style layout and emphasis on fresh, organic, and plant-based products, Sprouts has become a go-to for wellness-minded shoppers. With 58 stores already in Florida, this Daytona Beach location will save local fans the 50-mile trek to Oviedo.

Sprouts was recently named “Retailer of the Year” by Progressive Grocer, praised for its curated inventory and exceptional customer experience. The opening comes just weeks after Trader Joe’s launched across the street, drawing big crowds on its first day. Meanwhile, Aldi continues its regional expansion, with new stores in Ormond Beach and Port Orange, and Key Food Supermarket just cut the ribbon on a new Port Orange location.

The local grocery game is getting a serious upgrade.

🧾 State Lawmakers Approve Audit of Daytona Beach Spending

Moving from produce to politics, the City of Daytona Beach is under the microscope. The Florida Legislature’s Joint Legislative Auditing Committee unanimously approved an audit to review the city’s financial practices—spurred by concerns raised by State Sen. Tom Wright.

Wright’s call for scrutiny follows a city audit revealing over $300,000 in annual spending for car allowances to 85 employees, including some who didn’t even use the vehicles for city work. That was just the beginning. Wright’s letter outlined concerns over purchasing card use, vehicle purchases, and surplus funds from building permits.

City Manager Deric Feacher responded swiftly, stating the city “welcomes” the audit and pledging full transparency. He emphasized the opportunity to correct misinformation and strengthen financial controls.

The audit’s scope hasn’t been announced yet, but Daytona Beach officials say they’ll cooperate fully. The city says it’s ready for a checkup—now the state gets to play doctor.

⚖️ Justice Delivered in Daytona Beach Murder Case

A tragic 2021 murder in Daytona Beach reached resolution this week as Steve Tilbury was convicted of second-degree murder in the death of Charles Cummings. The attack occurred at Ritchey Cadillac, where both men worked. Tilbury, a Leesburg resident, struck Cummings with a baseball bat while he was seated at a computer.

The jury reached its decision after more than four hours of deliberation. Although initially charged with first-degree premeditated murder—which would have meant a mandatory life sentence—the lesser conviction gives Judge Kathryn Weston discretion when sentencing on January 12.

The case gripped the local community, especially as Cummings, initially alert in the hospital, succumbed to his injuries a week later. The medical examiner confirmed a severe skull fracture caused by the blow.

Tilbury claimed self-defense, alleging Cummings had attempted to stab him, but the jury did not find the argument persuasive. Tilbury’s criminal history includes theft and weapons charges, which prosecutors likely used to bolster their case.

State Attorney R.J. Larizza stated, “For his murderous rage, the defendant deserves to spend the rest of his life in prison.”
