🚓 OBPD Chief Defends Sergeant After FCSO Detective’s Charges Dropped
Ormond Beach Police Chief Jesse Godfrey: "We stand firmly behind our Sergeant. His actions were consistent with OBPD training and expectations..."
We acknowledge the State Attorney’s Office decision to file an order of no information and accept the outcome of their review. This decision reflects prosecutorial discretion and does not indicate wrongdoing by our officer or any deficiency in how the traffic stop was handled.
The recent arrest involving a deputy from a neighboring agency has received public attention. We want to clarify our position while maintaining the professionalism and respect that guide interagency relationships.
Our Sergeant acted in good faith and based his decisions on the totality of the circumstances observed at the time. Officers operate under the legal standard of probable cause, which is distinct from the prosecutorial standard of proof beyond a reasonable doubt. A prosecutor’s decision not to pursue charges is a judgment about what can be proven in court. It is not a finding that the officer acted improperly or lacked legal justification.
The facts in the arrest report supported the Sergeant’s actions. The vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed, our Sergeant activated his emergency lights and siren, other motorists yielded, and the vehicle continued driving recklessly for a significant distance before stopping. Based on these observations, our Sergeant followed established policy, used appropriate methods to gain compliance, and executed the stop safely and professionally.
We stand firmly behind our Sergeant. His actions were consistent with OBPD training and expectations, and the information available to him at the time fully supported the decisions he made.
We value our partnerships with surrounding agencies and remain committed to constructive collaboration in service to the communities we all protect.
Our focus continues to be transparency, professionalism, and ensuring the safety of the public and our officers.

🎖️ Veterans Groups Get $1,500 Boost from MOAA Chapter
In a show of community-driven generosity, the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) Halifax Area Chapter has donated $1,500 to three organizations dedicated to supporting veterans.
The funds, raised during the chapter's Veterans Day Ceremony, were split among Halifax Urban Ministries’ Barracks of Hope and the Vietnam Memorial initiative (each receiving $375), and the Volusia Values Veterans Support Endowment ($750).
Skip Keating, MOAA chapter director, emphasized the importance of collaboration: “We’re just much more powerful if we’re doing it as a community... These are just three [projects] that really stand out.”
Barracks of Hope is a transitional shelter for homeless veterans, serving 71 individuals this year. Meanwhile, plans are underway to install a 7,500-pound Vietnam veterans monument at Daytona Beach’s Veterans Memorial Plaza in March 2026.
The Volusia Values Veterans Endowment, launched earlier this year, will help fund food security, training for Veteran Service Officers, and local veteran-focused events like the annual Stand Down.
The message from MOAA and its partners is clear: no veteran should be left behind.

⚖️ Lawsuit Claims Officer’s Death Was Preventable
A lawsuit filed by the family of fallen Edgewater Police Officer David Jewell has raised serious questions about corporate responsibility and hiring practices.
Jewell was fatally shot on Sept. 15, 2025, while off duty at a Circle K in Ormond-by-the-Sea. The alleged shooter, Eduardo Machado—a Circle K employee—fired 24 rounds in what authorities have called a "targeted assassination."
The lawsuit alleges that Circle K was negligent in hiring Machado, despite having been warned by law enforcement about his behavior and illegal gun use. Attorneys claim the company failed to take “reasonable steps to prevent foreseeable harm,” leading to Jewell’s death.
Sheriff Mike Chitwood reported Machado admitted to the shooting, blaming it on a bad day. Though he claimed there had been an argument with Jewell, he couldn’t provide any details.
The family's complaint underscores a deeper concern: ensuring businesses thoroughly vet employees when public safety is at stake.

📦 Porch Pirates Get Sneaky with Wi-Fi Jammers
Just when you thought package theft couldn’t get any sneakier, porch pirates are now jamming doorbell cameras with illegal tech to cover their tracks.
A viral video from Texas revealed thieves using a Wi-Fi jammer to block security systems. These jammers overpower your home’s signal, essentially “shouting” over it so cameras and smart devices can't transmit data.
Cybersecurity expert Horacio Maysonet says the solution is simple: go old-school. “The only way to stop thieves from jamming your signals is to not use Wi-Fi,” he advises. A hard-wired surveillance system remains unaffected by signal interference.
Though jammers are illegal under FCC rules and carry steep penalties, they’re still sold in disguise online. Maysonet warns that even devices labeled as passive can often be switched into illegal “active” mode.
So, while you're tracking that last-minute gift delivery, remember: your best defense might just be a cable.
