🎄 Holiday Lights Set Sail in Ormond Beach
For the first time ever, the Halifax River Yacht Club’s annual Christmas on the Halifax boat parade will launch from Ormond Beach’s Cassen Park, lighting up the river starting at sunset on Saturday, Dec. 20. This festive floating tradition typically starts in Daytona Beach, but this year, organizers hope the new launch point will draw more participants and spectators.
Past Commodore Chris Brown, who leads the charge each year, says the expansion is thanks in part to Ormond Beach’s new floating dock. The parade will float past Caribbean Jack’s and through several marinas, ending at the yacht club. Judges will rate boats on lights, sound, and creative themes—with entries ranging from onboard bands to dazzling displays of cheer.
Aside from spreading holiday joy, the event also supports a serious cause. Proceeds go to the Veterans Support Fund, with typical years raising $2,000–$3,000 for local veterans.
“It’s a big hoot,” says Brown. And a very merry one at that.

💇♀️ Inmates Turn a New Leaf with Cosmetology Training
At the Volusia County Correctional Facility, five women are blow-drying their way to a brighter future. This week marks the successful completion of the jail’s first-ever cosmetology training program, developed in partnership with Daytona State College. The initiative builds on the success of the facility’s earlier barber program and helps prepare inmates for meaningful careers post-release.
With hands-on instruction in hairstyling, sanitation, and customer service, the program isn’t just about salon skills—it’s about instilling confidence, professionalism, and hope. All five participants are close to their release date and plan to pursue full state licensure through continued education.
Training took place right inside the facility, with licensed instructors helping inmates build not only their craft but also their future. It’s one of many reentry programs in the county aimed at reducing recidivism and boosting job readiness.
Curlers, clippers, and second chances—Volusia County is setting the stage for transformation.

🌳 Flagler Moves to Shield Bulow Creek from Development
Flagler County has taken a big step toward conservation by voting unanimously to pursue a Florida Forever grant to protect 153 acres of land in the Bulow Creek floodplain. This slice of environmentally sensitive shoreline would serve as a vital buffer between Bulow Creek and the looming Summertown development—a massive mixed-use project featuring homes, retail, and even a hotel.
Thanks to a deal with the developer, Sunbelt Land Management, the county now has a chance to preserve key wetlands, floodplains, and rare habitats, all while maintaining the historical character of the land. The plan includes significant setbacks and buffer zones between the development and creek.
Commissioners and residents alike are hopeful, though many are already asking for more. There’s a push to expand conservation efforts and secure additional oak canopy-rich lands nearby before they’re lost to bulldozers.
The Florida Forever council meets again in February to review applications. Until then, Flagler’s making sure this piece of paradise doesn’t slip away.

🚓 Deputies Injured in Crash: A Holiday Reminder for Drivers
A routine day in Palm Coast nearly turned tragic when two Flagler County deputies on motorcycles were struck by a vehicle, sending one airborne and pinning the other under his bike. Thankfully, both deputies suffered non-life-threatening injuries, though back injuries and soreness are a concern.
The crash, caused by a driver cited for improper lane change and marijuana possession, marks the third deputy injured in traffic incidents in just ten days.
Sheriff Rick Staly didn’t mince words: “We’re lucky we’re not burying deputies today.”
As the holiday rush intensifies, local law enforcement is urging drivers to slow down, stay alert, and be mindful—especially around emergency responders. The two injured deputies were transported to Halifax Health for further treatment.
A sobering reminder: safety isn’t seasonal, and a little patience behind the wheel can go a long way.
