🌊 Volusia County Plots a Comeback for Its Eroding Beaches
After years of hurricane hits and heavy erosion, Volusia County is taking serious steps to protect and preserve its "sand-starved" coastline. Nearly 27 of the 37 miles managed by the county are now labeled "critically eroded" by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. The culprit? Over 6 million cubic yards of sand lost in storms like Ian and Nicole.
Jessica Fentress, the county's Coastal Division director, said the situation is so dire, it’s like being on “life support.” But help is on the way. With $82 million in grant funding, the county is crafting a long-term Beach Management Plan to guide sand replenishment and coastal protection strategies—everything from artificial reefs and breakwaters to dune restoration and even doing nothing in low-risk areas.
Projects are already underway, including a large-scale sand placement in Daytona Beach Shores. The county has also hired Taylor Engineering to conduct vulnerability assessments and propose tailored strategies.
Now, they need public input. A short survey on Volusia.org invites residents to weigh in on priorities and methods. Because in the end, these beaches don’t just belong to the coastline—they’re a vital part of Volusia’s economy and identity.

☕ Faith Meets Flatbreads at The Boardroom Coffee Co
What do surfboards, Jesus, and flatbreads have in common? They all come together at The Boardroom Coffee Co., which opened its doors in Ormond Beach on Dec. 15. The coffee shop is the brainchild of Pastor Robbie O’Brien, founder of Salty Church, and is more than just a place to grab a latte—it's a community hub with spiritual flavor.
The space doubles as overflow seating for Salty Church’s packed Sunday services and acts as a gathering spot for youth and adult ministry groups throughout the week. True to its name, The Boardroom features beachy vibes, big-screen TVs for sermons, and enough cold brew to power a revival.
But it’s not all sermons and surfboards. The Boardroom is a not-for-profit under the church's ministry umbrella, managed in partnership with local roasters Lucid Grounds and Steel Oak Coffee. Whether you’re in for a morning meeting, weekend waffle, or a subtle nudge toward spirituality, Pastor O’Brien says all are welcome.
“It’s a cool spot to hang out, and maybe they’ll warm up to the idea of spirituality,” he shared. Coffee with a mission? We’ll sip to that.

🚓 Traffic Trouble: Asleep at the Green Light and a Crash & Dash
Things got a little bumpy in Ormond Beach traffic this week—literally and figuratively.
First up, a 23-year-old man from Daytona Beach was found asleep at the wheel in a turn lane at Nova Road and West Granada Boulevard. Despite a green light and a chorus of honking cars, he snoozed through several light cycles until police intervened. When the officer opened the car door and turned off the engine, the driver finally woke up. He admitted to having "a couple drinks" but refused sobriety tests. A little too relaxed behind the wheel, he now faces DUI and drug-related charges.
In another story, a 50-year-old man crashed his car into a road sign and tree on North Halifax Drive, then fled the scene on foot. Police caught up with him nearby, noting the strong smell of alcohol and classic signs of intoxication. He too refused field sobriety tests and was deemed a flight risk, earning a trip to the hospital—and then jail.
Two DUIs, one night, and a reminder to leave the car keys behind when your holiday spirits get too spirited.
