✊ Juneteenth Events Planned in Daytona Beach
Daytona Beach residents will have multiple opportunities to celebrate Juneteenth and honor the history, culture and legacy of freedom during events scheduled for Saturday, June 13.
The annual Juneteenth Family Festival will take place at Cypress Park from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event will feature live entertainment, educational exhibits, food vendors, youth activities and cultural programming designed to celebrate African American heritage and the significance of Juneteenth.
Also scheduled that day is the Hometown Heroes Banquet at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Mori Hosseini Student Union. The banquet will recognize community leaders and unsung local heroes who have made a positive impact throughout the area.
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Texas learned of their freedom more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Since becoming a federal holiday in 2021, celebrations have continued to grow across the nation, including here in Volusia County.

🏊 More Than Swimming: Aqua Journey's Mission Is Water Safety
For Aqua Journey Swim School in Ormond Beach, teaching children how to swim is only part of the mission.
Owner Carly Caldwell says the family-owned business focuses heavily on water survival skills, helping children learn techniques that could save their lives in an emergency. The school, located on South Nova Road, offers lessons for infants as young as six months old and has served local families for more than a decade.
The program emphasizes teaching children how to independently roll onto their backs and float if they unexpectedly enter the water. Caldwell says this approach goes beyond traditional swim instruction and addresses a critical issue: drowning remains the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 in the United States.
The school also encourages parents to practice multiple layers of water safety, including active supervision, pool barriers, alarms, CPR training and swim lessons.

🌡️ Dangerous Heat Expected Across Volusia and Flagler
The hottest stretch of weather so far this year is expected to arrive this weekend, with heat index values forecast to climb as high as 105 degrees.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will reach the low to mid-90s while humidity levels remain extremely high, creating dangerous conditions for anyone spending extended time outdoors. Saturday is expected to bring the highest heat risk, though temperatures in the 90s are forecast to continue into next week.
Officials warn that the combination of heat and humidity could impact anyone lacking adequate hydration, shade or air conditioning. Overnight temperatures remaining in the 70s will provide little relief.
Residents are encouraged to drink water before becoming thirsty, wear lightweight clothing, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day, and regularly check on elderly neighbors and family members. Children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles, even for a short time.

🐶 When Can You Legally Rescue a Dog From a Hot Car?
With Florida entering one of its hottest periods of the year, animal welfare experts are reminding residents that a parked vehicle can become deadly for pets within minutes.
Florida law does allow individuals to break into a vehicle to rescue a dog or other vulnerable animal under specific circumstances. Before taking action, a person must reasonably believe the animal is in imminent danger, contact law enforcement or 911, use only the force necessary to gain access, and remain with the animal until authorities arrive.
Experts note that even on a 72-degree day, temperatures inside a vehicle can exceed 100 degrees within an hour. During Florida summers, interior temperatures can become life-threatening much faster.
Owners who leave animals in dangerous conditions may face animal cruelty charges, significant fines and other penalties under Florida law.
The safest approach is simple: if pets cannot accompany you indoors, leave them at home where they can stay cool and safe.
