LEST WE FORGET…

Lexington: Where Freedom First Drew Blood

As Americans celebrate Independence Day, our thoughts naturally turn to July 4, 1776—the day the Declaration of Independence was adopted. Yet the struggle for American liberty began more than a year earlier, on a quiet spring morning in Massachusetts, when ordinary citizens stood against the most powerful army in the world.

That first stand occurred in Lexington, where the opening shot of the American Revolution was fired. History remembers it as "The Shot Heard 'Round the World." Although Ralph Waldo Emerson later immortalized the phrase in his poem Concord Hymn, leading many to associate it with Concord's North Bridge, the first shot that ignited the Revolution was actually fired on Lexington Green during the tense confrontation between Captain John Parker's militia and advancing British regulars. To this day, no one knows who pulled the trigger. What is certain is that those few seconds forever changed the course of history.

Before dawn on April 19, 1775, more than 700 British soldiers marched from Boston toward Concord with orders to seize colonial weapons and military supplies. Their advance had been reported by Paul Revere and other riders, allowing local militia companies to prepare. On Lexington Green, Captain John Parker assembled roughly seventy militia members—farmers, tradesmen, and neighbors who had no desire for war but were determined not to surrender their rights.

Parker's orders reflected both courage and restraint: "Don't fire unless fired upon." As British Major John Pitcairn demanded the militia disperse and surrender their arms, confusion gripped both sides. Then a single shot cracked through the morning air. Within moments, disciplined order dissolved into chaos as British troops fired volleys into the militia. Eight Americans were killed and several more wounded. The first blood of the Revolution had been shed.

Rather than ending colonial resistance, Lexington strengthened it.

The British continued their march to Concord, expecting to destroy large stores of military supplies. Instead, they found most of the weapons had already been removed by alert Patriots. As smoke rose from fires started while destroying military equipment, colonial militia gathered near Concord's Old North Bridge. Believing the town was being burned, hundreds advanced toward the bridge.

Like Lexington, both sides hesitated. Again, no American wished to begin the fight. This time, however, British soldiers fired first. The militia answered with disciplined volleys that forced the Redcoats to retreat from the bridge. It marked the first organized American victory over British regulars and proved that citizen soldiers could stand against one of the world's finest professional armies. Emerson would later commemorate this moment in Concord Hymn, forever linking the phrase "The Shot Heard 'Round the World" with Concord, even though the Revolution's first shot had echoed across Lexington Green hours earlier.

The British withdrawal quickly became one of the most punishing retreats in military history. As the exhausted column made its fifteen-mile march back toward Boston, thousands of minutemen and militia poured in from surrounding towns. Fighting from behind stone walls, trees, barns, and homes, they struck the British again and again in a series of relentless ambushes.

Captain John Parker and many of the survivors from Lexington even met the retreating British once more in what became known as "Parker's Revenge." Running low on ammunition and suffering mounting casualties, the British expedition escaped destruction only after reinforcements under Lord Percy arrived to fight their way back to Boston. By day's end, the King's army had learned a painful lesson: Americans would not be intimidated into surrendering either their arms or their liberties.

The events of April 19, 1775, transformed former British subjects into determined American citizens. They were not professional soldiers. They were fathers, sons, merchants, blacksmiths, laborers, and farmers willing to risk everything for the principle that free people should govern themselves.

As we celebrate our nation's independence today, we should remember that the freedoms we enjoy were neither freely given nor easily won. They were earned through extraordinary sacrifice by ordinary men and women who believed that liberty was worth defending, regardless of the cost.

The fields of Lexington and the bridge at Concord are more than historic landmarks—they are sacred reminders that freedom demands courage, vigilance, and an unwavering commitment to the principles upon which our nation was founded. The greatest tribute we can pay those heroes is not simply to remember their sacrifice, but to remain worthy of the priceless inheritance they secured for every generation that followed. Today, America is threatened from within. We must never forget the sacrifices of those who have gone before that has maintained the freedoms we have today. Be vigilant!
