⚡ Lifeguard Recovering After Indirect Lightning Strike
Beachgoers along Volusia County's shoreline received another reminder that Florida's summer storms can become dangerous in moments. Lifeguard Damien Curry was standing beside his pickup truck near the Seminole beach approach in Ormond Beach on July 4 when lightning struck the vehicle, causing an indirect strike that prompted medical evaluation. Curry was transported to a hospital as a precaution before being released later the same day and even drove his truck back to the station. Officials said the bigger challenge wasn't the weather itself—it was convincing visitors to leave the beach despite nearby lightning. Beach Safety officials continue urging everyone to immediately seek shelter whenever lightning warnings are issued, regardless of whether rain has started.

🐶 Rescue Dogs Ready for a Day Out
The Halifax Humane Society has introduced "Dogs Day Out," a new volunteer program designed to give shelter dogs a welcome break from kennel life while helping them become more comfortable in everyday situations. Community members can check out a dog for a few hours, complete with a backpack of supplies and activity suggestions, before returning them in time for afternoon adoption opportunities. The initiative benefits both dogs and volunteers by reducing stress, increasing socialization, and boosting adoption prospects. Inspired by a successful program in Maui, organizers hope these short adventures create lasting connections between people and pets. The first 125 participants will also receive special promotional gifts as a thank-you for taking part.

🌊 Family Urges Beach Safety After Teen's Tragic Drowning
A Central Florida family is grieving the loss of 17-year-old Amareon Anthony, who died after being caught in a rip current off Daytona Beach. According to Volusia County Beach Safety, lifeguards rescued the teen's friend Friday evening while an extensive overnight search continued with rescue vessels, jet skis, sonar equipment and dozens of lifeguards. Anthony was found Saturday morning after a bystander spotted him floating offshore and called 911. His family remembers him as a bright, caring teenager who loved spending time near the water, making the tragedy especially difficult to comprehend. As loved ones prepare to honor his memory, they hope others will recognize the dangers of rip currents and always exercise caution before entering the ocean.
