🦁 Local Lions Honored for Service

Four members of the Volusia & Flagler Lions have received the Crusader Sword Award, recognizing their dedication to serving their communities. Honorees include Trish Vevera of Ormond Beach, Mary Yochum of Ormond-by-the-Sea, Hank Lunsford of South Daytona and Nina Guiglotto of Flagler County.

The award recognizes Lions who demonstrate exceptional commitment to service, leadership and making a lasting community impact. According to the organization, the Crusader Sword symbolizes a community member willing to step forward, lend a hand where needed and improve the lives of others. The four recipients were celebrated for their continued dedication to strengthening communities throughout Volusia and Flagler counties — proving that meaningful local change often begins with people willing to serve.

📚 Local Author Sets Fall Book Tour

Ormond Memorial Art Museum and Gardens Executive Director Stephanie Mason-Teague is heading out for three local book signings featuring her debut, “Empty Mess: Rediscovering Life After Kids,” and its newly released sequel, “Empty Mess: Beyond Supermom.”

The first free event runs from 4-6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at Novel Tea Book Shop in Ormond Beach, including a signing, meet-and-greet and community Q&A. Mason-Teague will follow that with appearances Nov. 6 at Flipping Pages Bookshop in Daytona Beach and Nov. 7 at Fern & Fable Books and Collective in Ormond Beach. Her humorous and personal writing explores empty nesting, rediscovering identity and finding new adventures beyond motherhood. All three events are free and open to the public.

⚖️ Daytona Beach Man Sentenced to Life

A 19-year-old Daytona Beach man has been sentenced to life in prison after a jury found him guilty of sexual battery on a person younger than 12 and lewd or lascivious molestation of a person younger than 12.

Cameron Sheffield Jr. was convicted following a two-day trial, according to the 7th Circuit State Attorney’s Office. Circuit Judge A. Christian Miller imposed the mandatory life sentence immediately following the verdict. Sheffield had been arrested on Nov. 24, 2025, and was held at the Volusia County Branch Jail. The case was prosecuted by Assistant State Attorney Ashley Terwilleger and investigated by the Daytona Beach Police Department. The conviction and sentencing bring the criminal prosecution at the trial-court level to a close.

🐢 Experts Dive Into Record Turtle Season

Volusia County’s record-breaking 2026 sea turtle nesting season will take center stage during the Marine Discovery Center’s October Discovery Lecture Series. “Sea Turtle Nesting 2026: A Panel Discussion” begins at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, at the center in New Smyrna Beach.

Experts representing four local nesting districts will share highlights from Canaveral National Seashore, New Smyrna Beach Turtle Trackers, Volusia County Environmental Management and Volusia Turtle Patrol. Panelists include National Park Service Ranger Laura Henning, Jennifer Winters of Volusia County Environmental Management and Abbey Appelt of Ecological Associates, along with a Volusia Turtle Patrol representative. Guests can also ask questions about nesting activity on area beaches. Admission is free, although donations are appreciated, and advance registration is requested.

🎖️ Veterans Can Now Book Appointments Online

Veterans using Volusia County’s Daytona Beach Veterans Services office have a new way to schedule assistance. As part of the Volusia Values Veterans Program, the county has launched online appointment scheduling, allowing veterans to select a service officer and choose between in-person, telephone or virtual appointments. Walk-ins remain welcome.

The Daytona Beach office is located at 1845 Holsonback Drive and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon and 1-5 p.m. Veterans can also schedule by phone at 386-254-4646. Service officers assist current and former members of the U.S. armed forces and their dependents with compensation and pension claims, vocational training and other benefits. The online system is designed to make those services easier and more convenient to access.
