✨The Long Road to Labor Day

Every first Monday in September, Americans mark the unofficial end of summer with cookouts and one last trip to the beach. But Labor Day's origins are rooted in a harder story: the fight of 19th-century workers for basic dignity on the job.

In the late 1800s, it was common for laborers, including children as young as five, to work twelve-hour days, six or seven days a week, with little legal protection. Out of that struggle came the idea of a "workingmen's holiday." Credit for proposing it is still debated between two union men with strikingly similar names: Peter J. McGuire of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Matthew Maguire of the Central Labor Union. Whoever deserves the honor, the first Labor Day parade stepped off in New York City on September 5, 1882, when 10,000 workers marched from City Hall to Union Square on their own unpaid time.

The idea spread quickly. Oregon became the first state to make it official in 1887, and by 1894, twenty-eight states had followed. That June, in the shadow of the bitter Pullman Strike, Congress and President Grover Cleveland made Labor Day a federal holiday.

Florida caught up soon after. Orlando held its first Labor Day observance in 1917, complete with a downtown parade, speeches from local labor leaders, and athletic contests at the fairgrounds — a pattern of parades and picnics that spread through the state's growing cities.

More than a century later, the holiday endures, even as its roots in the labor movement have faded into the background of a long weekend. ✨

💰 Council Backs Sheriff’s Budget

Budget season brought a spirited exchange to Volusia County Council chambers as members voted 6-1 to maintain the law enforcement millage rate at 1.5994 mills. The rate is expected to generate roughly $106.8 million for the Sheriff’s Office, compared with approximately $103.4 million under the rollback rate. County Chair Jeff Brower, the lone dissenting vote, argued for rollback amid concerns about rising spending and future property tax changes. Sheriff Mike Chitwood defended his agency’s budget, pointing to staffing needs, new recruits and the addition of beach patrol responsibilities. Other council members ultimately supported the proposed rate, citing public safety commitments and previously approved staffing and raises. A final budget hearing is scheduled for Sept. 22.

🏍️ Ormond Beach Motorcyclist Killed on I-4

An early-morning ride ended tragically Sunday when a 22-year-old Ormond Beach motorcyclist was killed in a crash on Interstate 4 just east of State Road 44. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, traffic had stopped because of an earlier crash when the rider, traveling on a 2024 Honda CBR500R, approached the backup and struck the rear of a semi-truck at about 3:46 a.m. The motorcyclist, who authorities said was wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene. The semi driver was not injured and remained at the crash site. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.

  • 1565 – Pedro Menéndez de Avilés and his Spanish expedition came ashore near the Timucua village of Seloy at what would become St. Augustine, beginning the establishment of Spain’s permanent settlement there.

  • 1844 – A powerful hurricane began battering northeastern Florida near St. Augustine, producing hurricane-force winds before crossing the peninsula and devastating the Gulf Coast community of St. Joseph.

  • 1915 – Okaloosa County was officially established in northwest Florida, created from portions of Santa Rosa and Walton counties.

  • 1965 – Hurricane Betsy threatened South Florida and the Florida Keys, prompting hurricane warnings from Fort Pierce and Venice southward, including Lake Okeechobee and all of the Keys.

  • 1965 – As Hurricane Betsy approached, South Florida residents prepared for potentially destructive storm tides, with especially dangerous flooding forecast for the Miami area, Key Biscayne and the Upper Keys.

  • 1970 – Lightning struck a group of football players and coaches practicing at Gibbs High School in St. Petersburg, killing two people and injuring 22.

  • 2004 – Florida continued recovering from Hurricane Frances, which had crossed the peninsula and made a second landfall in the Big Bend before moving into Georgia.

  • 2004 – Roughly three million Floridians remained without electricity on September 7 in the aftermath of Hurricane Frances, while residents faced shortages of gasoline, ice, water and other supplies.

  • 2008 – President George W. Bush declared a federal emergency in Florida because of the threat posed by Hurricane Ike, authorizing federal assistance for Monroe County.

  • 2008 – Evacuations were underway in the Florida Keys as powerful Hurricane Ike moved through the Caribbean and threatened the region.

  • 2017 – The National Hurricane Center issued a hurricane watch for the Florida Keys, Lake Okeechobee and much of South Florida as Hurricane Irma approached.

  • 2017 – Miami-Dade County expanded mandatory evacuations on September 7 as Hurricane Irma threatened South Florida, ultimately placing hundreds of thousands of residents in evacuation zones.

  • 2017 – Brevard County ordered more than 100,000 residents of Merritt Island, coastal areas, mobile homes and other vulnerable locations to evacuate ahead of Hurricane Irma.

  • 2017 – Approximately 1,700 Florida Highway Patrol troopers began working 12-hour shifts statewide to assist with emergency preparations and the response to Hurricane Irma.

  • 2017 – Florida officials issued an evacuation order for eastern Hendry County late on September 7 as Hurricane Irma approached; the evacuation became mandatory the following morning.
