🇺🇸 The History of Memorial Day

Memorial Day began not as the unofficial start of summer, but as a solemn act of remembrance. In the years following the Civil War, communities across the United States began gathering in cemeteries to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers, flags, and prayers. The observance became widely known as Decoration Day, a name that reflected its original purpose: honoring those who had given their lives in service to the nation.

In 1868, General John A. Logan, leader of a Union veterans organization, called for a national day of remembrance on May 30. Over time, the observance expanded beyond Civil War dead to include Americans who died in all wars. After World War I, Memorial Day became a broader tribute to all fallen U.S. service members.

In 1971, Congress made Memorial Day a federal holiday observed on the last Monday in May. Today, amid family gatherings and long weekends, its deeper meaning remains: a national pause to honor sacrifice, remember courage, and reflect on the cost of freedom.

🍎 Chamber Honors Teachers of the Quarter

The Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce celebrated eight local educators during its latest Teacher of the Quarter recognition on May 20 — part of the Chamber’s longest-running community program.

Each quarter, the Chamber partners with Ormond-area schools to spotlight teachers who go above and beyond in their classrooms. At the end of the school year, all 32 quarterly honorees and their principals are invited to a celebratory luncheon.

This round’s recipients represent schools across the community, from Beachside Elementary to Seabreeze High School. Honorees include educators in exceptional student education, math, guidance counseling, and elementary grade levels.

In a social media post, the Chamber praised the teachers’ dedication and daily impact, noting the “lasting difference” they make in students’ lives. It’s a reminder that while the school year may be winding down, the influence of a great teacher lasts far longer.

🌊 Officials Urge Caution as Memorial Day Crowds Hit the Beach

As Memorial Day weekend draws large crowds to the shore, Volusia County Beach Safety officials are urging swimmers to stay vigilant — especially when it comes to rip currents.

Deputy Chief AJ Miller says additional lifeguard towers will be staffed to handle the influx of visitors. Red flags warning of high surf or hazardous conditions are likely to fly throughout the weekend.

Beachgoers are encouraged to swim in front of staffed towers and remember the simple rule: when in doubt, don’t go out.

Officials also recommend downloading the Volusia Beaches app to check access points and surf conditions before heading out. With a festive atmosphere and packed sands, awareness becomes even more important.

For many, the beach is a holiday tradition. A little preparation, officials say, helps keep it a safe one.

🚀 SpaceX Launch Set for Monday Morning

SpaceX is scheduled to launch a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station no earlier than 7:41 a.m. on Memorial Day, May 25. The mission, dubbed Starlink 10-47, will carry 29 Starlink satellites into orbit.

The rocket will travel northeast after liftoff, with the first-stage booster landing on the drone ship “A Shortfall of Gravitas” in the Atlantic Ocean.

Depending on weather and cloud cover, the launch could be visible across parts of Volusia County — and potentially as far north as Jacksonville Beach.

There’s something uniquely Floridian about starting a federal holiday with a rocket launch. If skies cooperate, it may offer an early-morning show before the day’s festivities begin.

🌊 Beach Safety in Focus After Tragic Incident

A 2-year-old girl died May 23 after running into a traffic lane on the sands of New Smyrna Beach and being struck by a vehicle. The incident occurred near East Seventh Avenue. Authorities say the driver remained on scene and impairment or excessive speed are not believed to be factors.

With beach traffic increasing during holiday weekends, officials are urging parents to consider non-driving sections of the beach when visiting with children. For those in driving zones, beach safety officials recommend setting up on the ocean side of traffic lanes and holding children’s hands when crossing.

The tragedy underscores an important message: even in familiar places, vigilance matters.
