🏆 Nasr Nabs Third-Straight Victory in Rolex 24
The checkered flag waved under sunny skies as Felipe Nasr made history, clinching his third consecutive Rolex 24 victory at Daytona in the No. 7 Penske Porsche. Despite a record-setting fog delay of over six hours overnight, the race remained full of suspense and tight finishes across all four classes. Nasr outdueled Jack Aitken’s No. 31 Cadillac with just 22 minutes left in the 24-hour marathon, defending his lead by inches before pulling away for the win.
The GTD class brought arguably the best finish of the event, with the No. 57 Mercedes-AMG edging out its Aston Martin rival by a razor-thin 1.3 seconds after a dramatic final-lap charge. Meanwhile, early-race chaos saw multiple wrecks within the first few minutes, evoking more Daytona 500 than endurance race. But once the sun came up and the fog lifted, the action on the track made the wait worthwhile.

🏠 Florida Lawmakers Wrestle with Property Tax Overhaul
While engines were revving in Daytona, political gears were grinding in Tallahassee. The Florida House Ways & Means Committee advanced a controversial proposal to phase out non-school homestead property taxes over the next decade. The plan, backed by Republicans and supported by Gov. Ron DeSantis, could head to voters in November as a constitutional amendment. Proponents say it gives local governments time to adjust and encourages fiscal responsibility. Critics, including local officials and Democrats, warn it could cripple public services and shift the burden to renters and businesses.
In a related move, another proposal aims to tighten caps on annual property tax increases, potentially slowing big hikes for homeowners and landlords alike. Whether these tax-slashing ideas become reality remains to be seen — the Senate has yet to offer its own counterplan, leaving the future of Florida’s tax structure in legislative limbo.

🚑 EMTs in Volusia Hit with Massive Repayment Demands
While some Floridians consider future tax breaks, nearly 30 Volusia County EMTs are grappling with unexpected financial nightmares — being told they owe thousands of dollars due to a payroll coding error dating back to 2023. Thanks to a mistake involving shift differentials, some lead EMTs were overpaid for months without realizing it. Now, the county is asking for repayment, with amounts ranging from under $100 to a staggering $62,000.
The county insists it's legally required to collect the money, but EMTs — many of whom work exhausting overtime schedules for modest pay — say the repayments could push them into crisis. The local union is challenging the demand, requesting full transparency and legal clarification. Meanwhile, several union leaders have abruptly resigned, though the union says it’s unrelated.
For the workers on the front lines, the timing couldn’t be worse. One EMT summed it up: “Love doesn't pay the bills.”
