Photo: Volusia County

Volusia County broke ground last Thursday on a new Fire Station 15 at 1159 Red John Road in Daytona Beach, replacing an older facility that had been operating out of shared space inside the county's Fire Training Center. The new building clocks in at over 12,000 square feet and will give crews proper dedicated quarters — bunk rooms, a day room, vehicle bays — for the first time. The station covers unincorporated Volusia and parts of Daytona Beach and is also home to the county's Hazardous Materials Response Team, which serves the entire county. Beyond day-to-day operations, the new location frees up the Training Center to expand programs that draw fire service professionals from across Florida and beyond. Construction wraps early next year.

A disagreement over an unleashed dog in an Ormond Beach subdivision turned into something considerably more dramatic last week. A 26-year-old resident approached a maintenance worker about a loose pet; the worker responded with a lecture about leashes and some colorful language; the resident responded with a threat to shoot him; the worker replied in kind. At that point, the resident went home, wrapped a kitchen knife in a sock for transport, covered his face with a bandana, and began canvassing the neighborhood asking where the worker had gone. Police intervened before the situation progressed further. Given a history of erratic behavior, the man was taken to the hospital under the Baker Act rather than formally charged. The dog's whereabouts remain unconfirmed.

Finally, a small infrastructure win worth noting. A Holly Hill resident had been raising concerns for some time about the crosswalks on Riverside Drive near 2nd and 3rd Streets — faded markings, missing signage, and drivers who treat the area as a personal time trial course. After he brought his concerns to city leadership, the public works crew went out and repainted the crosswalks and replaced the absent signs at both locations. His request for a flashing alert light was declined on the grounds that the crossing doesn't meet the traffic threshold for that kind of investment. The resident remains skeptical that paint alone will change driver behavior — and he's probably not wrong — but fresh markings are better than none, and he pushed until something happened. That counts.
