🎨 “Rockefeller Flag” Finds a Permanent Home

Artist Mateo Blanco has donated his original painting “Rockefeller Flag” to The Casements in Ormond Beach, giving the contemporary work a permanent home at John D. Rockefeller’s former residence. Created for “The American Legacy” exhibition celebrating America’s 250th anniversary, the all-black oil painting explores the connection between petroleum, American industry and the traditional medium of oil paint. Blanco said the strong response from exhibition visitors convinced him the piece belonged at The Casements, where it can continue sparking conversations about history and legacy. While “The American Legacy” exhibition concludes Aug. 26, “Rockefeller Flag” will remain on display permanently, adding a modern artistic perspective to one of Ormond Beach’s best-known historic landmarks.

🚧 Roadwork Creates Parking Headache for Lagerheads

A $13 million FDOT safety project along A1A is creating an unexpected challenge for Lagerheads Bar & Grill in Ormond-by-the-Sea. New curbing and a shared-use path have eliminated the restaurant’s front parking spaces, leaving customers with just 12 spaces in the rear. Staff say construction barricades are also giving passing drivers the impression that Lagerheads is closed, putting additional pressure on employees and musicians who rely on the restaurant for income. FDOT says the former parking was within state right-of-way and is being removed to improve pedestrian safety. The larger project includes 18 new crosswalks, drainage improvements and a 10-foot-wide shared-use path. Construction began in April and is expected to continue into 2027.

🏡 Florida Home Sales Gain Ground

Florida’s housing market continued its quiet rebound in July, with single-family home sales rising 5.1% from a year earlier to 23,870 closings. The statewide median price climbed 3.7% to $425,000, while condo and townhouse sales jumped 11%, with their median price holding at $295,000. That doesn’t mean the pandemic-era frenzy is back, however. Realtors say sellers who price homes according to current comparable sales are finding buyers, while those holding out for 2021 or 2022 values may spend considerably longer on the market. Foreclosures have increased but remain a small fraction of Florida’s housing stock. With pending sales also rising, industry economists see evidence that pent-up demand is bringing more buyers off the sidelines.

📱 Quick Thinking Helps Crack $8K Scam

A 74-year-old Volusia County woman who was scammed out of $8,000 helped deputies track down a suspect — and authorities say she should soon get her money back. The ordeal began with a text appearing to be from Wells Fargo, followed by a caller who convinced the woman she was under investigation and instructed her to withdraw cash. After handing a package to an Uber courier, she recorded the vehicle’s tag number and contacted police. Investigators traced the delivery and arrested 25-year-old Amoye Jameison on grand theft and organized fraud charges. Deputies say the stolen cash was recovered. Sheriff Mike Chitwood reminded residents that legitimate financial institutions and law enforcement agencies will not instruct people to withdraw cash or pay money to resolve warrants or investigations.
