🌿 Blue Spring State Park Introduces Day-Use Reservations
Visitors planning a trip to Blue Spring State Park will soon need to reserve their spot before arriving. Beginning July 15, all day-use guests—including annual passholders—must make an online reservation in advance, with entry fees paid during the booking process. Park officials say the new system is designed to ease traffic congestion and eliminate the long entrance lines that often develop during the busy summer season. Reservations can be made up to 60 days in advance, giving visitors greater certainty that they'll be able to enjoy one of Florida's most popular natural attractions. With nearly 600,000 visitors each year, Blue Spring remains a favorite destination for swimming, kayaking, wildlife viewing and, during the winter months, observing hundreds of manatees.

🚔 Deputy and K-9 Escape Injury After Patrol SUV Crashes into Pond
A Volusia Sheriff's deputy and his K-9 partner escaped without injuries after a patrol SUV crashed into a retention pond near Daytona Beach while exiting Interstate 95. According to Sheriff Mike Chitwood, preliminary findings indicate the deputy was traveling approximately 92 mph when the marked Ford Explorer left the roadway, struck several traffic delineators and splashed into the water. Dashboard video reportedly showed no emergency lights activated before the crash, and investigators are still determining whether the deputy was responding to a call. The patrol vehicle was totaled, and the incident remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol. Sheriff Chitwood said disciplinary action is expected following the investigation.

🐸 Cane Toads Pose Serious Risk to Pets

Conservancy of Southern Florida
The return of frequent summer rain also brings increased activity from invasive cane toads, a species capable of producing toxins that can seriously injure or even kill pets within minutes. The large amphibians, averaging 3” to 4” long, secrete a poisonous milky substance from glands behind their eyes when threatened. If a dog or cat bites or mouths a cane toad, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission recommends immediately rinsing the pet's mouth with running water for about 10 minutes, wiping the gums and tongue to remove toxins, and seeking emergency veterinary care without delay. Homeowners can reduce encounters by keeping yards trimmed, removing debris, eliminating standing clutter, and bringing pet food and water bowls indoors overnight.
