🎉 Ormond Beach Founder’s Day Set to Launch a New Tradition
After decades of envisioning a citywide celebration, Ormond Beach resident Doug Thomas is finally seeing his idea come to life. On April 25, the inaugural Founder’s Day will take place at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex, marking the city’s incorporation date of April 22, 1880.
Thomas, whose family roots trace back to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania — home of the famous Groundhog Day festivities — has long believed Ormond Beach deserved a signature event of its own. Now, with the completion of the perimeter road around the Sports Complex (officially named Doug Thomas Way in 2025), the logistical puzzle pieces have fallen into place.
The event, running from 1–9 p.m., will feature food trucks, fireworks, live music, vendors, a kids zone, and youth baseball and soccer games. Proceeds will benefit the Ormond Beach Police Athletic League, whose board Thomas chairs. Support has poured in from community organizations and local businesses, including performances by Seabreeze High School students.
Thomas, who has served nearly 50 years in various city leadership roles, says the celebration is about unity and gratitude. As he puts it, it’s a chance for residents to pause and appreciate “how wonderful of a community” Ormond Beach has always been.

👁️ Lions Clubs Offer Free Vision and Blood Sugar Screenings
Continuing the theme of community care, the Ormond Beach and Port Orange Lions Clubs are focusing on health and prevention.
The groups recently provided free vision and blood sugar screenings during a seminar hosted by local nonprofit Healthier. Wealthier. Wiser. Inc. For those who missed it, there’s another opportunity on the horizon. The Lions will host free screenings from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 14 at the fourth annual Family Health and Business Expo, located at 5111 S. Ridgewood Ave. in Port Orange.
In addition to the screenings, the Lions will collect used eyeglasses and hearing aids — items that can make a meaningful difference when redistributed to individuals in need.
The effort reflects the Lions’ longstanding mission of sight and health advocacy, offering simple but impactful services that can help detect issues early. For residents, it’s a convenient way to check in on their health while supporting a broader culture of community wellness.

🌊 Ponce Inlet Beach Cleanup Invites Community to Pitch In
And finally, for those looking to spend a Saturday morning outdoors with purpose, Volusia County is organizing a beach cleanup at Winterhaven Park in Ponce Inlet on March 7 from 8 to 10 a.m.
The event is part of the county’s Keep Volusia County Beautiful initiative, launched in 1998 as an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful and Keep Florida Beautiful. Volunteers will receive gloves and trash bags, and are encouraged to wear outdoor work attire and bring water and sunscreen.
Beach cleanups play a vital role in protecting marine ecosystems. According to environmental organizations, plastic pollution poses a serious threat to marine mammals and sea turtles, including several endangered species found in Florida waters. Removing debris before it washes back into the ocean helps reduce entanglement and accidental ingestion risks.
Residents, visitors, and civic groups are all welcome. While RSVPs are encouraged via email, they are not required — just a willingness to help keep local shorelines clean and thriving.
