🌟🌟An Ormond Beach inventor walked away from the second annual Volusia Innovation Challenge at the Ocean Center with $10,000 in his pocket and a solution so obvious in hindsight you'll wonder why nobody thought of it sooner. Steve Lofvers developed TarpBags — water-fillable bags that hold emergency roof tarps in place after a storm without driving a single nail into the damaged surface. No additional punctures. Fully reusable. The kind of idea that earns a standing ovation in hurricane country. Along with the prize money, Lofvers gets a year of workspace and mentoring at the Volusia Innovation Hub. Second place went to Tracker, a real-time tool inventory system, while the Best of Show award went to LEAF Alliance, a platform connecting people facing legal abuse with vetted legal, financial, and emotional support professionals. Nearly 300 people packed the venue for what is quietly becoming one of the county's signature events.

🌟🌟Two Ormond Beach congregations are throwing open their doors this Saturday for Easter celebrations worth putting on the family calendar. Both events are free, family-friendly, and designed with kids at the center.

🌟🌟Daytona Beach's City Commission spent more than seven hours Wednesday wrestling with the fallout from two damning audits — and nearly lost its city manager in the process. The first audit revealed that the fire department ran more than $500,000 in vehicle maintenance charges through purchasing cards in violation of city policy, along with $50,000 in food and beverage tabs at places like Five Guys and Applebee's that lacked any documented official purpose. The second revisited the take-home vehicle situation reported here last week, flagging the same lack of mileage tracking and unmarked cars. One commissioner moved to terminate City Manager Deric Feacher on the spot; the motion failed 5-2. The city auditor noted that no fraud was found and that Feacher had already begun acting on some recommendations before the reports were even finalized. Wholesale policy overhauls are now underway. The meeting ended sometime in the early morning hours.

🔐🔐Finally, a cybersecurity story with a local dimension. Congressman Randy Fine, who represents Florida's 6th Congressional District and has been a vocal supporter of the U.S.-Israel military campaign against Iran, says his office was recently targeted by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in a sophisticated phishing operation. A staff member received messages crafted to look like outreach from a major news network, followed by a Signal message containing what security officials believe may have been a geotracking link disguised as a meeting invitation. Capitol Police and the House Office of Cyber Security are involved. Fine says he won't be intimidated. The incident is a reminder that the reach of international cyber operations extends well beyond Washington — and that anyone on someone's target list can be found wherever they happen to be working.
