👮 Ormond Beach Police Welcome New Officer

The Ormond Beach Police Department officially added a new member to its ranks this week, swearing in Officer Reilley McRay on Wednesday, June 10.

McRay recently graduated from the police academy and completed the department’s in-house training program. She will now begin the next phase of her law enforcement career as she enters field training alongside experienced officers.

In announcing the appointment, the department praised McRay’s work ethic and commitment throughout the training process.

“Her dedication and drive have already set her apart and we’re excited to see all she’ll accomplish,” the department shared in a social media post.

Field training is a critical step for new officers, providing hands-on experience and mentorship while serving the community. The department's newest officer joins the agency at a time when law enforcement agencies across Florida continue efforts to recruit and retain qualified personnel.

Residents may soon see McRay working alongside veteran officers as she gains practical experience throughout the city.

🌿 Explore Volusia Unveils July Adventure Lineup

Volusia County’s popular Explore Volusia program is inviting residents to get outside and experience some of the area's most beautiful natural environments throughout July.

The free, guided programs range from kayaking and snorkeling to estuary exploration and bioluminescence paddles. Environmental specialists lead each excursion, helping participants learn about local wildlife, ecosystems and conservation efforts while enjoying hands-on outdoor experiences.

Highlights include paddling on Lake George, nighttime bioluminescence tours through Mosquito Lagoon, marine-life snorkeling adventures at Ponce Inlet, and explorations of Rose Bay and Spruce Creek. Most paddle events provide free use of county kayaks for those who do not have their own equipment.

Because participation is limited, reservations are required for all programs. Interested residents can register by searching “Explore Volusia” on Eventbrite or by contacting Tommy Nordmann at [email protected] or (386) 943-7081, ext. 21266.

Whether you're an experienced outdoor enthusiast or simply looking for a unique summer activity, the program offers opportunities for all ages to connect with Volusia County’s natural beauty.

♿ Additional ADA Improvements Approved for Andy Romano Park

The Ormond Beach City Commission has approved nearly $102,000 in additional work at Andy Romano Beachfront Park to ensure the facility meets full ADA accessibility standards.

The improvements include new handrails, pavers, concrete work and modifications to lengthen the park’s new ADA-accessible beach ramp. The park is already undergoing a major $2.5 million reconstruction effort following extensive damage caused by Hurricane Milton in 2024.

Commissioners expressed frustration during their June 9 meeting about ongoing project delays and unexpected costs. City officials explained that many of the additional ADA-related requirements were identified during the building permit review process and were not included in the original engineering plans.

Despite the added work, city staff still anticipate construction wrapping up in August. The park remains open and accessible to the public during the project.

Much of the overall reconstruction cost is being offset by FEMA reimbursements, which are expected to cover approximately $2.3 million of the seawall and beach ramp project. New shade structures are also planned as part of the park’s revitalization.
