🚔 Ormond Carjacking Leads to Two Arrests

A routine stop at an Ormond Beach gas station became a frightening ordeal for Raymond Sylvester when a man allegedly jumped into his work truck and drove off, throwing Sylvester from the vehicle.

Authorities identified the suspect as 31-year-old Lee Miller. Sylvester said Miller later returned with a knife and threatened him before leaving with a woman and children in the truck. The pursuit continued into Flagler County, where deputies used stop sticks before the vehicle was abandoned near a Wendy’s.

Miller faces multiple charges, while Daniela Alvarez, 34, was arrested for allegedly filing a false police report after initially claiming she was a victim. Sylvester’s truck was totaled, but he said the experience taught him an important lesson: no vehicle is worth risking his life.

👮 Six Endangered Children Found Safe

Six children who were the subject of a Daytona Beach Police search have been located safely, according to the department.

Police had asked the public for help finding Joia Jina Shepard and Pervis Deontia Sylvester, who authorities believed were traveling with the children in a silver vehicle. The children, ranging in age from 4 to 13, had been ordered by a court to be removed from the pair’s custody, according to police.

The department announced Sept. 13 that Shepard, Sylvester and all six children had been located. Details about where or how they were found have not yet been released.

Police say the investigation remains active and ongoing, and it was unclear whether either adult would face charges as of the latest update.

🌊 El Niño Could Head Off the Charts

This year’s El Niño could become so powerful that meteorologists don’t have an official category for it. The Climate Prediction Center forecasts a 75% chance that the developing event will exceed the strength of previous El Niños dating to 1950 during October through December.

Pacific Ocean temperatures are forecast to reach about 2.7 degrees Celsius above normal, surpassing the current “very strong” classification. Meteorologists have informally reached for more colorful descriptions, including “super” and even “Jurassic” El Niño.

For Florida, there’s a trade-off. Strong El Niño conditions can create wind shear that suppresses Atlantic hurricanes, helping explain this season’s limited tropical activity. But the pattern can also contribute to a wetter, stormier Florida winter and an increased potential for severe weather, including tornadoes.
