🏗️ Ormond Crossings Finally Breaks Ground
After more than 20 years of planning, patience, and paperwork, Ormond Crossings has officially broken ground. The mixed-use development, sprawling across nearly 3,000 acres near U.S. 1 and I-95, is finally taking shape. At a ceremonial event on January 12, developers and city leaders marked the start of construction for what they call a transformational project for the region.
The vision? A community where residents can live, work, and play. The first phase will include 450 residential lots, and future plans call for 2,550 homes, a commerce park, and a lively town center with shops, restaurants, and green spaces. Developer Brad Kline, who recently acquired the land for $62 million, said the interest from major retailers has been unprecedented.
Ormond Beach Mayor Jason Leslie called the groundbreaking a "turning point," highlighting the long-term economic boost and job creation potential. Infrastructure work is underway, including a connector road and bridge over the railroad. This is the kind of slow-burn success story that reminds us: good things come to those who wait.

🪧 Protesters Rally Against ICE in Ormond and Daytona
Over the weekend, residents in Ormond Beach and Daytona Beach joined nationwide protests against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), following fatal shootings by ICE agents in Minnesota and Oregon. Local demonstrators gathered on January 10 as part of the "ICE Out for Good" movement, voicing concerns over immigration policy, law enforcement violence, and systemic injustice.
In Ormond, activist Suzanne McCarthy quickly mobilized over 50 participants through Indivisible. Protesters included a multigenerational mix—from 90-year-old Carol Andrews to young Jaya Hunter, marching with her mother to assert Indigenous rights. Signs read “No one is illegal on stolen land,” and music like Edwin Starr’s “War” set the protest’s tone.
Daytona Beach demonstrators rallied in front of City Hall, many expressing fatigue from decades of activism but renewed urgency in the current climate. "Why do I have to keep doing this?" asked protester Christy Howard, echoing a sentiment shared by many.
The protests, while peaceful, conveyed a strong message of community solidarity and a demand for change in immigration enforcement tactics.

⚖️ Life Sentence for Daytona Dealership Killer
Justice was served this week in a chilling workplace homicide that shocked Daytona Beach. On January 12, Steve Tilbury was sentenced to life in prison for the 2021 murder of co-worker Charles “Chuck” Cummings at Ritchey Cadillac. Tilbury was convicted of second-degree murder after striking Cummings in the head with a bat—a blow that proved fatal a week later.
Though originally charged with first-degree murder, the jury found Tilbury guilty of the lesser charge. His defense team argued mental illness, citing a schizophrenia diagnosis and pushing for psychiatric supervision over incarceration. But Circuit Judge Kathryn Weston wasn’t convinced, stating the crime’s brutality outweighed the possibility of leniency.
Tilbury maintained he never intended to kill Cummings, alleging a prior threat that lacked supporting evidence. The judge noted his hesitancy to acknowledge mental illness or commit to treatment.
The life sentence closes a tragic chapter for Cummings’ family and co-workers. It's also a sobering reminder of how quickly violence can erupt—even in seemingly ordinary workplaces.

🎤 Miranda Lambert to Headline Daytona 500 Pre-Race Concert
Start your engines—and warm up those vocal cords. Country music icon Miranda Lambert is bringing her star power to the Daytona 500 this year, headlining the pre-race concert on Sunday, February 15 at Daytona International Speedway.
Known for hits like “The House That Built Me” and “Somethin’ Bad,” Lambert is a Grammy winner and a legend in the country music scene. With a résumé boasting 38 Academy of Country Music Awards, she was recently named the Country Icon of 2024.
Speedway President Frank Kelleher said Lambert’s performance will bring “incredible energy” to the 68th running of the Great American Race. The infield concert will rev up fans ahead of the NASCAR Cup Series season opener, blending horsepower with powerhouse vocals.
Whether you're here for the racing, the music, or both, February 15 promises to be a high-octane day in Daytona.
