🌳 Public Invited to Weigh In on Ormond Tomb Park
Volusia County is asking residents to help shape the future of James Ormond Tomb Park during a public meeting from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5. The Parks, Recreation and Culture Division will gather feedback at the park, located at 3268 Old Dixie Highway in Ormond Beach, on a collection of proposed improvements. Concepts include a new inclusive playground with a safety surface, parking lot upgrades, a nature trail, benches and exercise equipment. Plans also call for interpretive panels and an open play area. The meeting is open to everyone, giving residents an opportunity to comment directly on potential changes before plans move forward.

💰 Ormond Beach Eyes Cuts While Holding Tax Rate Steady
Ormond Beach commissioners are leaning toward keeping the city's operating property tax rate at 4.3202 mills for 2026-27 while considering spending cuts ahead of a November vote on statewide property tax changes. The proposed $152 million budget maintains investments in public safety, infrastructure and parks while preserving reserves. City staff estimates future property tax changes could eventually reduce Ormond Beach revenue by millions of dollars annually. Commissioners Lori Tolland and Kristin Deaton suggested postponing or trimming discretionary projects, with Deaton outlining roughly $1 million in potential one-time reductions. No formal action was taken. Public budget hearings are scheduled for Sept. 9 and Sept. 23, when commissioners are expected to finalize the millage rate and budget.

🍎 Volusia Schools Add Funding for Teacher Raises
Volusia County Schools and Volusia United Educators have reached an agreement that will add $611,111 to an existing $4 million pool for teacher salary increases. Raises will vary based on experience, with eligible educators receiving between $1,800 and $3,000. Teachers with 10 to 15 years of experience can receive $1,800, while those with 26 or more years may qualify for the maximum $3,000 increase. Superintendent Dr. Carmen Balgobin said the agreement reflects the district's commitment to attracting and retaining educators. Eligible employees must submit verification of their Florida teaching experience to the district's human resources department by Sept. 2, 2026, to access the applicable increases.
