🎨 “Men Painting Women” Exhibit Celebrates Feminine Influence
At the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center, the gallery walls are telling stories of strength, sensuality, and inspiration in the “Men Painting Women” exhibition. Running through February 15, the show features four Florida artists — Robert Shirk, Herbie Martin, Weldon Ryan, and John Darovitz — all paying homage to the women who’ve shaped their lives.
Organized originally by Ormond Beach artist Robert Shirk, the exhibit blends personal tribute with artistic expression. Shirk credits his mother, grandmother, wife, and past lovers as his muses, saying their love and influence form the emotional core of his work.
A closing reception and artist talk will be held on February 4 from 3–5 p.m., with refreshments provided by the Friends of the Performing Arts Center. It’s a thoughtful and intimate showcase that invites the community to reflect on the power of feminine presence in art and life.

🔍 Smoke Signals in Sewer System 207
The Ormond Beach Public Works Department is gearing up for smoke testing in Sewer System 207 from January 19 through February 3, 2026, as part of its ongoing Inflow & Infiltration (I&I) survey. Don’t be alarmed if you see white or gray smoke drifting from roof vents — it’s completely normal and totally safe. However, smoke emerging from drains, yards, or the ground might suggest a plumbing issue.
Crews may enter backyards or side easements (never inside homes), and the smoke used is non-toxic, odorless, and safe for pets and plants. Ahead of testing, residents are asked to pour water into unused drains and flush all toilets. If smoke does make its way into your home, open the windows and call Public Works at (386) 610-0700.
This essential testing helps ensure the city’s sewer systems stay efficient and leak-free. Just a little smoke for a whole lot of peace of mind.

🫒 The Anointed Olive Finds a New Home
Ormond’s beloved olive oil tasting room, The Anointed Olive, has moved from Granada Plaza to The Trails Shopping Center after 11 flavorful years. While the address has changed, the warm welcome and savory samples remain the same.
Offering walk-in tastings every day, this cozy shop is a go-to spot for locals looking to spice up their meals with ultra-premium olive oils and balsamic vinegars. Whether you’re a seasoned taster or new to the concept, visitors are invited to explore bold new flavors — no pressure, no purchase required.
Still family-owned and passionately local, The Anointed Olive hopes the new space makes your next culinary adventure even more delightful.

🏗️ Local Government’s Public Voice Silenced in Plat Approvals
Significant changes are taking root in local cities development approval process, thanks to Florida Senate Bill 784. As of July 1, 2025, plat and replat approvals — the detailed drawings that divide land for development — no longer require city commission input if they meet technical standards.
This means no more public hearings for plats that tick all the regulatory boxes. Instead, city staff must handle these approvals administratively. Critics argue this move silences public voices and reduces the chance for negotiation — particularly when citizens raise concerns like traffic or safety.
City leaders expressed frustration over the state's preemption of local authority. Despite unanimous approval of the necessary ordinance, the Planning and Zoning Board is recommending enhanced public notifications to help keep residents informed of future development.

🌳 Arbor Day Rooted in Restoration at Tomoka State Park
In celebration of Florida Arbor Day on January 16, the Friends of Tomoka Basin State Parks marked their second year of native garden restoration with the planting of a new mulberry tree. The small but meaningful event took place at Tomoka State Park, bringing together local volunteers committed to preserving and enhancing natural habitats.
The planting is more than just symbolic. It underscores the ongoing commitment of the Friends group to reintroduce native species and foster biodiversity in this beloved local park.
It’s a quiet celebration of growth — both botanical and communal — for a group steadily making its mark one tree at a time.
