🐾 Paws on the Sand: Daytona May Get Its Own Dog Beach
Volusia County is one paw-step closer to expanding its dog-friendly coastline. Building on the triumph of the Ormond Beach dog beach, the County Council has pinpointed a 1.7-mile stretch between Williams Avenue and Seabreeze Boulevard in Daytona Beach as the potential site for a new pup-friendly paradise.
The proposed section boasts six vehicle ramps, two pedestrian walkovers, and nearly 300 off-beach parking spots—making it easy for locals and tourists alike to bring their four-legged companions along for a day in the sun. This expansion follows the wildly popular Ormond Beach pilot program, where over 13,000 tail-wagging visitors were logged and community feedback was overwhelmingly pawsitive.
Nonprofit Daytona Dog Beach, Inc. is on deck to maintain the area, footing the bill for start-up needs like signage, dog bags, and hydration stations. If approved, animal services will enforce rules similar to those in Ormond, ensuring a clean and safe experience for everyone—furry or otherwise.

🎖️ Saluting 75 Years: American Legion Post 267 Celebrates a Milestone
Turquoise décor, packed halls, and plenty of camaraderie set the tone for American Legion Post 267’s 75th anniversary bash in Ormond Beach. Chartered on October 6, 1950, the post honors WWII Navy Capt. Cassin Young and has become a cornerstone for veteran outreach and local engagement.
Hosted in a historic schoolhouse dating back to either 1887 or 1895—depending on which plaque you trust—Post 267 has spent decades giving back. With nearly $80,000 raised annually for veteran and community programs, and a flag retirement operation that retires about 7,000 American flags per year, their impact is far-reaching.
Mayor Jason Leslie recognized the Post’s extensive renovations and unwavering dedication in a special proclamation. With nearly half of its building improvements completed by Legion members themselves, it’s clear the spirit of service lives strong. From past commanders to auxiliary leaders, the celebration was as much about honoring legacy as it was about looking to the future.

🌿 Herb Helpers: Seaside Herb Society Spruces Up Garden
Green thumbs were hard at work recently as members of the Seaside Herb Society rolled up their sleeves to refresh the community garden at Bailey Riverbridge Gardens. The garden, lovingly maintained since 1993, got a hearty dose of TLC on September 27.
Volunteers planted new herbs, weeded garden beds, and trimmed back vigorous vines. Among the fresh additions were a large aloe, a home-grown marshmallow plant, and two mustard varieties cultivated from seed. Even the bricks got a makeover, thanks to local artist Trish Vevera, who painted labels to help visitors identify the herbs—a small touch that adds charm and educational value.
The society, which meets monthly from September through May, encourages anyone with an interest in plants or community service to join them. Whether you’re a gardening guru or just enjoy digging in the dirt, there’s always room to grow.
