👛 Power of the Purse Puts Children First

More than 400 women gathered at the Ocean Center on Aug. 21 for the 23rd annual Power of the Purse, benefiting the Community Foundation and United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties. Hosted by Women United-Volusia, this year’s event focused on children in ALICE households — families who are working but struggling to cover necessities such as housing, child care, food and transportation.

Early Learning Coalition representative Allison Miller highlighted the importance of kindergarten readiness and access to quality early education. Organizers emphasized that helping children enter school prepared can strengthen families and the broader community. The annual event brings together donors, businesses and community partners to support solutions aimed at creating greater stability and opportunity for local families.

📚 Local Author Takes Readers to Santa Fe

Ponce Inlet author Ginger Pinholster will celebrate her latest novel, “The Train to Santa Fe,” with a free event at Fern & Fable in Ormond Beach on Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. Pinholster will join fellow author Jessica Handler for a conversation, with refreshments also planned.

Released Aug. 25, the novel weaves together characters across generations and time periods, exploring family, culture and healing against the backdrop of the American Southwest. Pinholster, whose previous books include “Snakes of St. Augustine” and “City in a Forest,” found inspiration for the story after a work trip to Santa Fe — and, as she tells it, falling for a handsome cowboy. She now splits her time between Florida and Santa Fe.

🚔 Carjacking Case Ends With Two Arrests

A reported Ormond Beach carjacking ended in Flagler County on Saturday with two arrests following a multi-agency response. Authorities say 31-year-old Lee Miller fled into Flagler County while allegedly armed with a knife and with a woman and children still inside the vehicle.

Deputies deployed stop sticks before Miller allegedly abandoned the vehicle near a Wendy’s on Old Kings Road. The occupants were rescued, while deputies used a drone team, FireFlight helicopter and K-9 unit to locate and arrest Miller. Authorities later arrested 34-year-old Daniella Alvarez, who initially told deputies she was a victim but is accused of filing a false police report. Officials also said reports that a shooting occurred during the incident were unfounded.

  • 1933 – A severe hurricane approached Florida’s Atlantic coast on August 31 before striking near Jupiter Inlet. Winds around Jupiter reached approximately 110 mph, with significant damage between Jupiter Island and Fort Pierce.
