🚧 Prince of Peace, County Seek Solution on Hand Avenue Access
A new median on Hand Avenue is prompting continued discussions between Volusia County officials and Prince of Peace Catholic Church.
The median, part of a $5.1 million safety project between Clyde Morris Boulevard and Nova Road, prevents eastbound drivers from making a left turn into the church and its Like New Shop thrift store. Parishioners say the change has created safety concerns, as many now travel farther to make U-turns at Wellington Station before heading back.
Lori Tolland, who is also a parishioner, described recent meetings with County Engineer Tadd Kasbeer, church leadership and city staff as collaborative. While the county has indicated it will not remove the median, alternative solutions are under consideration.
Supporters of the project note it prioritizes full median openings for surrounding residential communities that rely solely on Hand Avenue for access. Discussions are ongoing.

🚨 Arrest Made in Fatal Toll Booth Crash
An arrest has been made in connection with the crash that killed longtime toll attendant Tammie Jo Baker in Daytona Beach Shores.
According to the District 7 State Attorney’s Office, 35-year-old Deanna Harrell of Ormond Beach faces charges of vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter. Authorities say Harrell drove through the Dunlawton Avenue beach approach toll booth Monday without slowing, striking the structure and sending it into the sand before the vehicle entered the ocean.
Sheriff Mike Chitwood said Harrell told investigators she had been drinking. Blood test results are still pending. Prior to the crash, 911 callers reported a black truck traveling the wrong way and hitting mailboxes.
A small vigil honoring Baker has continued to grow near the crash site, with flowers and photos placed in her memory. Officials say the investigation remains active as they seek justice for Baker and her family.
