👜 Power of the Purse Puts Children First

More than 400 women gathered at the Ocean Center on Aug. 21 for the 23rd annual Power of the Purse, supporting the Community Foundation and United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties.

This year’s event focused on children in ALICE households — Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed — where families earn an income but struggle with essentials including housing, child care, transportation, food and health care.

The program highlighted kindergarten readiness and the importance of access to quality early learning. Organizers emphasized how financial pressures can create barriers that affect children well before their first day of school. Through Power of the Purse, Women United-Volusia brings local women together to support programs designed to give children and families greater opportunities for long-term stability and success.

🏖️ Daytona Beachside Group Eyes a Split

From strengthening community ties to potentially cutting some, a group of Daytona Beachside residents and business owners is exploring whether to break away from the city.

Daytona Beachside United has begun gathering petitions to gauge support for de-annexation, citing concerns about crime, blighted properties, homelessness and what organizers describe as years of neglect. The group hopes the beachside could eventually become its own city or join neighboring Ormond Beach.

That second option isn’t receiving a warm welcome so far. A majority of Ormond Beach commissioners expressed little interest in annexing Daytona’s beachside during an Aug. 25 meeting. And any resident-led effort to leave Daytona would face another substantial hurdle: Under Florida law, the move would require action by the state Legislature.

🏁 Coke Zero Sugar 400 Weekend Roars In

Whatever Daytona Beach’s future boundaries may look like, this weekend the spotlight is firmly on the Speedway. Thousands of NASCAR fans are arriving for Coke Zero Sugar 400 weekend at Daytona International Speedway.

The Winn-Dixie 250 gets underway at 7:30 p.m. Friday, followed by Saturday’s Coke Zero Sugar 400 at 7:30 p.m., the NASCAR Cup Series regular-season finale. Fans are encouraged to arrive four to five hours early for parking and activities.

The crowds also provide a welcome late-summer boost for area hotels, restaurants and attractions. Even residents skipping the races should expect heavier traffic around the Speedway. Racegoers are encouraged to pack sunscreen, sunglasses and earplugs, while the NASCAR Tracks mobile app can provide updates throughout the weekend.
