🕵️ Masked Men Ransack Boutique, Flee with Fashion

Two masked men made a dramatic entrance—and exit—at Release Boutique inside Volusia Mall, causing chaos and walking away with nearly $5,000 in clothing and shoes. Surveillance footage shows them stuffing garbage bags with merchandise, while also racking up around $10,000 in damages by smashing glass and walls like a pair of fashion-forward wrecking balls.

The Daytona Beach Police Department is now seeking help identifying the suspects. With charges of grand theft and property damage on the table, they’ve released video footage in hopes the public can shed some light. Unfortunately, the suspects' masks and gloves are doing their job a little too well—police say they remain unidentified and it’s unclear if they acted alone.

Release Boutique, known for its trendy apparel and sneakers, is left dealing with a hefty mess while the community is left scratching their heads. If you have tips, Daytona Beach PD would love to hear from you.

🌧️ Residents Brace for Weekend Deluge in Volusia

Next up: Rain. Lots of it. Volusia County is gearing up for a soggy weekend, with officials warning that flooding could be more widespread than usual. Public Works crews are already in motion, checking canals, storm drains, and anything else that might stop water from going where it should.

Residents like Port Orange’s Mark Casel say they’ve seen it all before—his street was recently under four feet of water from just 2.5 inches of rain. He’s been documenting every puddle and is pointing fingers at overdevelopment nearby. “It’s not my water,” Casel said, “but I’m the one dealing with it.”

County officials are urging folks to prep: clean your gutters, check your culverts, and maybe grab a sandbag or two. Whether it’s a tropical system or just an October surprise, it looks like Volusia will be splashing into the weekend.

🐾 Daytona Beach Ends Longtime Contract with Humane Society

Animal services in Daytona Beach are getting a reboot. As of October 1, the city has officially shifted its sheltering operations to New Hope Animal Shelter in DeLand, parting ways with the Halifax Humane Society after a review of rising costs and evolving responsibilities.

The switch allows Halifax to focus more on adoption and medical evaluations while the city tackles housing and care for strays through new partnerships. Residents can now report stray animals through Volusia County’s non-emergency dispatch at (386) 248-1777, and surrender pets via several nonprofit organizations listed on the city’s website.

Meanwhile, the city continues its Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program for community cats, with help from Volusia County Animal Services and local vet Dr. Shelby Wolfe. Appointments for TNR can be scheduled by emailing [email protected]. For other inquiries, call the city’s Animal Services Unit at (386) 318-3303 or visit www.DaytonaBeach.gov/AnimalServices.

🏆 Volusia's Carmen Balgobin Named Superintendent of the Year

Volusia County Schools just added a prestigious feather to its cap. Dr. Carmen Balgobin has been named the 2025 Superintendent of the Year by the National Association of School Superintendents (NASS), recognizing her leadership and impact across the district.

Described as a steady and innovative force, Balgobin has led VCS through transformative improvements in student achievement, safety, and equity. From expanding instructional diversity to building stronger student support systems, her work is getting national attention—and for good reason.

Balgobin, ever the team player, credited the district’s teachers, staff, families, and community members for the win. “True academic achievement is the product of intentional leadership and a culture united in service of students,” she said.

NASS officials say her success is a model for modern school leadership—and a signal that Volusia is on the right educational track.
