🇺🇸 Ormond Beach Honors the Declaration of Independence
Patriotic organizations gathered on the steps of Ormond Beach City Hall on July 8 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The ceremony featured members of the Capt. James Ormond Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Daytona-Ormond Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, Ormond Strong and the Ormond Beach Historical Society. Ormond Beach Mayor Jason Leslie joined community leaders in taking turns reading portions of the historic document, honoring the nation's founding principles and the enduring importance of civic engagement. The annual observance offered residents a meaningful opportunity to reflect on American history during the country's semiquincentennial celebration.

🏖️ Daytona Beach Shores Considers Becoming "The Shores"
Leaders in Daytona Beach Shores are moving forward with a proposal that could officially rename the city simply "The Shores." City commissioners voted this week to advance a charter amendment that would appear before voters on the Nov. 3 ballot if it receives final approval. Supporters believe the shorter name would help distinguish the city from neighboring Daytona Beach, strengthen its identity and enhance tourism and business development. Officials estimate the transition would cost approximately $250,000, though city boundaries, governmental powers and municipal operations would remain unchanged. Commissioners must still approve the measure on a second reading before residents have the opportunity to decide the issue at the ballot box.

🚔 Deputy Expected to Repay Cost of Wrecked Patrol Vehicle
New details have emerged following last week's crash involving a Volusia Sheriff's deputy who drove a patrol SUV into a retention pond while traveling approximately 92 mph. Sheriff Mike Chitwood confirmed the deputy, identified as Greg Ingram, was not responding to an emergency at the time of the crash and is expected to face what the sheriff described as "paying compliance" for the totaled $73,000 patrol vehicle. In addition to the financial consequences, Ingram has been removed from K-9 duties, reassigned from the SWAT Team and could face additional disciplinary measures as the investigation continues. Fortunately, neither Ingram nor his K-9 partner, Goose, was injured in the incident.
