🎒 Realtors Deliver Backpacks to Local Students

Students at four Volusia County elementary schools are heading into the school year with a little extra help. The Daytona Beach Association of Realtors recently delivered 93 backpacks filled with school supplies for students at Ormond Beach Elementary, Pathways Elementary, Pine Trail Elementary and Champion Elementary.

The association is a business partner of Volusia County Schools, and district officials praised local organizations that make back-to-school giving an annual priority. James Barringer, VCS executive director of Student Services, said the donations help ensure students can begin the year ready to learn while demonstrating the community’s commitment to their success. The drive is one of several local efforts helping families start the school year on a prepared note.

🚔 Bicycle Lights Dispute Leads to Arrest

An argument over bicycle lights took a violent turn when a 67-year-old Ormond Beach man allegedly struck a transient man several times with a black metal bat outside a local fast-food restaurant.

According to police, the victim was sitting with his bicycle near the restaurant’s dumpsters when the suspect confronted him about not having lights on the bike. Police said the victim fought back in self-defense, at one point knocking the suspect unconscious. A witness reportedly corroborated the victim’s account. After being taken to the hospital, the suspect told officers he had been frustrated because he was also homeless and living in his vehicle, acknowledging that he “might have overreacted a bit.” He was later taken to jail.

✏️ “Blessing Boxes” Celebrate Teaching Milestone

Residents of Paradise Pointe Assisted Living and Memory Care put their creativity to work for local students, assembling personalized “blessing boxes” for two second-grade classrooms at Pierson Elementary School.

The classrooms belong to mother-daughter teachers Allison and Brittany Cowart, who are marking a memorable school year together. Allison is celebrating her 30th year of teaching, while Brittany is beginning her first — right next door to her mom. Paradise Pointe residents filled pencil boxes with colored pencils, crayons, glue and sticky notes, while the teachers also received gift cards for a first-week meal. The project was part of the community’s monthly “Made with Meagan” activity and gave residents, including a former second-grade teacher, a chance to reminisce while supporting a new generation.

And finally, community care isn’t limited to the two-legged residents of Volusia County.

🐾 Behind the Scenes of Pet Adoption

Finding a forever home is only the final step in a much longer journey for animals at the Volusia County Animal Services shelter. Before dogs and cats become available for adoption, staff work through identification, medical care and ongoing behavioral observation to prepare each animal for its next chapter.

Strays are first checked for microchips and other identification while staff attempt to locate their owners. If no owner comes forward after the required holding period, animals receive health assessments and may undergo vaccinations, parasite treatment, spay or neuter surgery and microchipping. Staff also observe temperament, energy and social behavior throughout each animal’s stay. Those insights help prospective adopters understand which pets may be the best match for their homes and lifestyles.
