🌳 ReGrow the Loop 2026 Takes Root in Ormond Beach

Get ready to dig into environmental action—ReGrow the Loop 2026 kicks off Jan. 31 in Ormond Beach with a mission to restore and protect the region’s natural beauty through community education. Now in its third year, the initiative, led by Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail volunteers, is rolling out 16 events focused on native vegetation, invasive species, and eco-friendly practices.

The first event, hosted at the Ormond Beach Regional Library, will spotlight local habitats and species with speakers from Volusia County, the Marine Science Center, and Florida Fish and Wildlife. Among this year's big concerns: the aggressive spread of Brazilian pepper trees. The OSLT is teaming up with Volusia County and the City of Ormond Beach to combat this issue—culminating in a native tree giveaway for Earth Day on April 18.

Whether you're a lifelong local or new to the Loop, there's something to learn—and do—to help the environment thrive.

🚓 Arrest Made After Bomb Threat at Ormond Synagogue

A fast-acting police response brought swift resolution to a disturbing situation on Jan. 28, when a bomb threat was made to Temple Beth-El in Ormond Beach. Authorities arrested 57-year-old Robert Tuck just over two hours after he called in the threat.

The synagogue and its elementary school were placed on lockdown while the Volusia Sheriff’s bomb squad swept the premises. No explosives were found, and thankfully, no one was harmed. Tuck was taken into custody at a halfway house in Daytona Beach and is now facing four felony charges and one misdemeanor.

Ormond Beach Police Chief Jesse Godfrey commended the seamless coordination between departments, emphasizing that such threats are taken seriously and that the safety of the community remains paramount.

⚖️ Daytona Man Charged in Deadly Fentanyl Case Of OB Woman

Justice may be on the horizon for the family of Kayla Geraty, a 34-year-old Ormond Beach woman who died of a fentanyl overdose last April. On Jan. 28, Trevin Smith, 33, was arrested and charged with manslaughter in connection with her death.

Investigators say Smith sold Geraty heroin laced with fentanyl, a deadly synthetic opioid. Cellphone records, undercover operations, and surveillance footage confirmed repeated drug deals between the two, including a final meeting at a 7-Eleven on Nova Road. Deputies say Smith fled during his arrest attempt, discarding evidence and trying to evade capture on foot.

Further evidence uncovered in jailhouse phone calls revealed Smith admitted to lying about knowing Geraty, even though they worked together. His arrest marks a key step in holding fentanyl suppliers accountable amid a growing opioid crisis.
