⛳ FAA Meeting Could Shape River Bend’s Future

The future of River Bend Golf Course may soon become clearer as Ormond Beach officials prepare to meet with the Federal Aviation Administration regarding the long-closed property.

During the June 9 City Commission meeting, officials discussed growing public interest in reopening the 172-acre municipal golf course, which has remained closed since its operator filed for bankruptcy in December 2020. According to a petition referenced during the meeting, 2,601 residents have signed in support of reopening River Bend.

The primary challenge remains the course’s location on airport-owned property adjacent to the Ormond Beach Municipal Airport. City staff have previously stated that FAA regulations and long-term airport planning requirements limit what can be done with the land.

Economic Development Director Brian Rademacher told commissioners that staff will meet with the FAA to seek clarification on whether the city can move forward with a request for qualifications, proposals or information from potential operators.

Mayor Jason Leslie noted that golf industry professionals recently reviewed prior studies and concluded River Bend was once a thriving facility. However, questions remain regarding renovation costs, long-term leases and whether a viable business model exists. For now, residents and city leaders alike await answers from the FAA.

🔬 Lohman Legacy Continues to Inspire Young Scientists

More than 40,000 Volusia County students have benefited from a unique educational opportunity thanks to the generosity of Nancy and the late Lowell Lohman.

At a recent School Board meeting, Volusia County Schools honored the Lohmans for funding the Museum of Arts and Sciences Field Study Program, which has provided free science-focused field trips for every fifth and eighth-grade student in the district since 2021.

The program began after the Lohmans donated $340,000 through the FUTURES Foundation, helping transform an idea into a districtwide initiative. As MOAS transitions into its new identity as The Brown, the program will continue under the name “The Lohmans’ Day at The Brown.”

Science Coordinator Jen Taylor shared a favorite memory of Lowell Lohman, recalling how he annually asked whether every student would be included in the program. The answer was always yes — exactly as he intended.

Nancy Lohman announced her commitment to continue supporting the program for at least six more years, ensuring future generations of students experience hands-on learning opportunities. As one of Lowell’s favorite quotes displayed in the planetarium reminds visitors, “Adventure in life begins with learning.”

🎓 Seabreeze Graduate Earns Prestigious Scholarship

A recent Seabreeze High School graduate is heading to college with both recognition and support for her academic accomplishments.

Lucy Kimble has been awarded a $2,500 STAR Scholarship from the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO) Sisterhood, a national organization that supports educational opportunities for women. The scholarship recognizes exceptional high school senior women pursuing higher education in the United States or Canada.

Recommended by PEO Chapter BD of Daytona Beach, Kimble built an impressive résumé during her time at Seabreeze. She participated in softball and swimming, served on the school advisory council and was a member of the Allied Health Academy.

This fall, she will attend the University of Florida, where she plans to major in biology while pursuing her goal of a future career in medicine.

The scholarship not only recognizes academic achievement, leadership and service, but also reflects the strong educational foundation being built by students throughout Volusia County.
