Members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 44 were presented with a mayoral proclamation earlier this month, recognizing their decades-long commitment to maritime safety in the community. Established locally in 1941, the volunteer group continues to lead vessel safety checks, boating workshops and public awareness campaigns aimed at reducing preventable accidents.

With hurricane season on the horizon, Volusia County Emergency Management is encouraging residents to prepare now — especially those who may need extra assistance during an emergency.

Officials are urging eligible residents to enroll in Florida’s Special Needs Registry, which helps emergency planners coordinate transportation and specialized sheltering during disasters. Managed by the Florida Department of Health in partnership with state and local agencies, the registry plays a key role in identifying individuals who may require limited medical support.

Special needs shelters are designed for those who need assistance but not round-the-clock hospital-level care. Residents requiring ventilators, hospital beds or isolation accommodations are advised to make separate arrangements well before a storm approaches.
