🚤 Safe Boating Week Sets Sail in Ormond Beach
Ormond Beach is marking National Safe Boating Week, May 16–22, with a renewed focus on life jackets, education and preparedness.
Members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 44 were presented with a mayoral proclamation earlier this month, recognizing their decades-long commitment to maritime safety in the community. Established locally in 1941, the volunteer group continues to lead vessel safety checks, boating workshops and public awareness campaigns aimed at reducing preventable accidents.
Throughout the week, residents can take advantage of free vessel safety inspections to ensure required gear — including life jackets and fire extinguishers — is on board and operational. Educational workshops will also cover navigation basics and “Rules of the Road,” helpful for both new and seasoned boaters.
The flotilla’s message is simple: preparedness saves lives. Officials also encourage filing float plans, monitoring Florida’s fast-changing weather and never operating a vessel under the influence.

🏅 Reinhart Honored with Valor Award
In other community news, Volusia County Council Vice Chair Matt Reinhart has received the Valor Award from the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida, recognizing nearly four decades of public service.
Reinhart’s career began in 1986 at the Volusia County Branch Jail, where he worked his way up from corrections officer to warden before retiring in 2017. Over the years, he supervised hundreds of staff members and thousands of inmates, later contributing statewide as past president of the Florida Model Jail Standards Jail Inspection Team.
Elected to the County Council in 2022, Reinhart now represents District 2 and has championed initiatives like the Second Chance program, which equips inmates with practical job skills for reentry into the workforce. He also lends his time to numerous local boards, including the Domestic Abuse Council and transportation oversight committees.
The award reflects what colleagues describe as a long-standing commitment to strengthening both public systems and the community they serve.

🌪️ County Urges Early Sign-Up for Special Needs Registry
With hurricane season on the horizon, Volusia County Emergency Management is encouraging residents to prepare now — especially those who may need extra assistance during an emergency.
Officials are urging eligible residents to enroll in Florida’s Special Needs Registry, which helps emergency planners coordinate transportation and specialized sheltering during disasters. Managed by the Florida Department of Health in partnership with state and local agencies, the registry plays a key role in identifying individuals who may require limited medical support.
Special needs shelters are designed for those who need assistance but not round-the-clock hospital-level care. Residents requiring ventilators, hospital beds or isolation accommodations are advised to make separate arrangements well before a storm approaches.
Those needing help with registration can contact the Volusia County Emergency Management Division at 386-254-1500. Proactive updates to contact and medical information are also strongly encouraged ahead of hurricane season.

🍣 More Insight on Takeya Steak House Closing
Takeya Japanese Steak House & Sushi Bar, a longtime favorite for hibachi celebrations and sushi nights, announced its immediate closure this week. After nearly 30 years in business, owners Ormond residents Chris and Bichnga Bui say it’s simply time to retire.
The husband-and-wife team, both originally from Vietnam, built their lives — and restaurant careers — in the Ormond Beach area. Chris first opened Bamboo Garden in 1985 before launching Takeya in 1997. Over the years, the restaurant became known for lively hibachi tables, expansive sushi offerings and a steady stream of birthdays and anniversaries celebrated around sizzling grills.
Now in their 60s, the couple says the decision feels both surreal and relieving. While stepping away is emotional, they hope the iconic Williamson Boulevard building will soon begin a new chapter under fresh ownership — continuing to serve the community they’ve long called home.
