🦈 Lulu's Law Brings Shark Alerts to Cell Phones
From the classroom to the coastline, beach safety is receiving a significant boost with the signing of Lulu's Law. President Donald Trump approved the legislation Friday, requiring the Federal Communications Commission to allow wireless emergency alerts for shark attacks. The law honors Lulu Gribbin, the Alabama teenager who lost a hand and part of a leg during a shark attack while diving for sand dollars along Florida's Panhandle. Just 90 minutes earlier and only a few miles away, another woman also lost an arm in a separate attack. Supporters hope the new alert system will provide beachgoers with faster warnings during dangerous situations and help prevent future tragedies.

📚 Volusia County Schools Continue Academic Climb
Volusia County Schools is celebrating another year of academic progress after the Florida Department of Education released its 2026 spring assessment results. The district improved reading achievement across every tested grade level and either increased or maintained math scores throughout grades 3-8. Students also posted impressive gains in Algebra I, Geometry, Biology, Civics, and U.S. History, with several categories outperforming state averages. Superintendent Carmen Balgobin praised the hard work of students, teachers, staff, and families, calling the results a reflection of a community-wide commitment to student success. The district also led Central Florida coalition districts in several year-over-year improvements and hopes to build on last year's milestone designation as an "A" school district.

⚖️ Historic Health Care Fraud Sweep Includes Ormond Beach Case
Federal officials have announced the largest health care fraud crackdown in U.S. history, charging 455 defendants in schemes involving more than $6.5 billion in fraudulent claims. Florida accounted for a significant share of the cases, including one Miami defendant accused of submitting $3.76 billion in false Medicare and Medicaid claims. The investigation uncovered a wide range of alleged fraud involving unnecessary medical equipment, opioid prescriptions, wound care products, and falsified patient records. Locally, Ormond Beach resident Venessa K. Thomas is among those charged, accused of submitting nearly $262,000 in Medicaid claims for mental health services that investigators say were never provided. Authorities say the nationwide effort demonstrates an increased focus on protecting taxpayer-funded health care programs.

🚔 Teens Arrested After Pond Gathering in Ormond Beach
Meanwhile, Ormond Beach police responded to reports of a large group of teenagers swimming in a park pond where "No Swimming" signs are clearly posted. Officers found eight juveniles at the scene, including two Daytona Beach teens who were allegedly intoxicated. Witnesses reported that several teens confronted a passerby before police were called. Investigators say the two arrested juveniles, ages 16 and 17, were attempting to pressure other teens into drinking alcohol, though most refused. Both reportedly resisted officers during the arrest before being transported for medical clearance and later taken to the county's Family Resource Center. The incident serves as another reminder about the risks associated with underage drinking and unsafe recreation areas.
