🥕 Mobile Farmers Market Delivers Healthy Impact
Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida’s Mobile Farmers Market is proving that access matters — especially when it comes to fresh food.
In its first year serving Volusia County, the traveling market distributed 5,490 pounds of produce and reached 313 residents. Between April 1, 2025, and March 31, 2026, the initiative filled 549 produce prescriptions for 87 patients, connecting families with fruits and vegetables like mangoes, melons, avocados, sweet potatoes and corn.
The program is part of Second Harvest’s broader “Food is Medicine” effort, which partners with healthcare providers to help children, seniors and underserved families gain recurring access to nutritious food. Leaders say the impact goes beyond pounds distributed — it’s about long-term health and empowerment.
The organization recently received additional funding support from the USDA, positioning the Mobile Farmers Market for continued growth.

🌊 Beach Driving Debate Intensifies After Tollbooth Tragedy
Meanwhile, in Daytona Beach Shores, the community continues to process the loss of toll worker Tammie Jo Baker, who died following a June 1 crash at the Dunlawton Boulevard beach access ramp.
While the county has installed new barriers near the tollbooth to enhance worker safety, conversations are expanding beyond the booth itself. Some residents are questioning whether beach driving should continue at all.
Local business owners and residents say the issue is complex. Many welcome added safety measures but stress that eliminating beach driving would require a clear off-beach parking plan. Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood has urged families to reconsider driving beaches, citing past incidents involving impaired and sober drivers alike.
The Dunlawton ramp remains closed through the weekend and is expected to reopen next week as officials weigh safety, access and long-standing coastal tradition.
