Hurricane season is a good time for Volusia County residents to make sure they’re connected to AlertVolusia, the county’s opt-in emergency notification system.

Unlike Wireless Emergency Alerts that may automatically appear on cellphones during certain life-threatening emergencies, county alert systems require residents to register. These systems can help local officials communicate important information about hurricanes, hazardous conditions, boil-water notices and other public safety concerns.

Residents should also check their cellphone settings to make sure Wireless Emergency Alerts remain enabled. Those alerts provide another layer of notification when potentially serious situations arise.

Between afternoon storms, hurricane threats and other Florida surprises, having more than one way to receive timely information is a smart addition to any household emergency plan.

🚔 Two Wounded in Holly Hill Stabbing

Two people were wounded in a stabbing Monday afternoon in Holly Hill, with police saying the incident may have stemmed from a dispute involving infidelity.

Officers responded around 12:54 p.m. to an apartment on 15th Street, where they found an injured woman and provided aid until medical personnel arrived. She was transported to a local hospital and reported in fair condition.

A male victim was later taken by private vehicle to Halifax Health Medical Center with stab wounds and admitted as a trauma alert. Police reported Tuesday that he was in critical condition.

The investigation remains active, with multiple scenes in Holly Hill and Daytona Beach under review. Volusia Sheriff’s Office crime scene investigators and Daytona Beach police are assisting Holly Hill authorities.

☄️ Double Meteor Show Heads for Florida Skies

Florida stargazers may catch a celestial two-for-one as the Southern Delta Aquarids and Alpha Capricornids meteor showers peak around July 30-31.

Neither shower is considered especially strong in the Northern Hemisphere, and this year brings another challenge: a bright moon, along with the possibility of cloud cover. Still, those hoping to spot a few streaks should head somewhere dark and away from city lights, with the best viewing generally between midnight and dawn.

If conditions spoil the show, there’s a promising encore. The Perseid meteor shower is already active and will peak Aug. 12-13. Known for producing plentiful meteors and bright fireballs, the Perseids are widely considered one of the year’s best meteor showers.

🐾 Blaze Finds His Forever Home

A young Dalmatian named “Blaze” received a fitting sendoff before heading to his new forever home: a visit with Volusia County firefighters.

The 1½-year-old dog arrived at the Volusia County Animal Shelter after a good Samaritan found him wandering alone. When efforts to locate his owner were unsuccessful, shelter staff provided veterinary care, vaccinations and neutering in preparation for adoption.

Blaze didn’t have to wait long. Before staff could even post his photo online, a family visited the shelter and made an immediate connection.

Before leaving for his new home, Blaze stopped by Volusia County Fire Rescue Station 42 in DeLand, where the Dalmatian—a breed with deep historical ties to the fire service—posed for photos and collected plenty of attention from firefighters.

Now that’s a picture-perfect adoption story.
