💡 Student Innovators Earn Real Funding for Big Ideas

High school and college students from Volusia and Flagler counties didn’t just pitch ideas — they walked away with grant funding to bring them to life.

The annual Generation IMPACT Social Innovation Fund Pitch Competition, hosted by the Community Foundation and United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, showcased student-driven solutions to community challenges.

Among this year’s winners was Stetson University student Fernanda Castillo-Enriquez, whose “Ballet for the World” initiative aims to expand access to dance education for children facing financial hardship. Also recognized was Florida State University MD candidate Brittney Jabot, whose Healthy Home Starter Kits Project supports older adults in partnership with the Council on Aging of Volusia County.

Donors and sponsors helped ensure every funding request was met, reinforcing what organizers called an investment in the region’s future leaders.

⚠️ Daytona Woman Loses $800 in Jury Duty Scam

A Daytona Beach woman caring for her father became the latest victim of a convincing jury duty scam.

According to a report, the caller posed as a deputy and claimed she had missed jury duty and faced arrest unless she paid $800 immediately. The scammer instructed her not to speak to anyone about the supposed warrant and directed her to send funds through a nearby bank.

After sending the money, she traveled to the courthouse in DeLand for what she believed would be a required signature verification — only to learn she had been scammed.

In a brazen twist, the caller later apologized and promised a refund that never came.

Law enforcement agencies continue to remind residents that legitimate officials will never demand payment over the phone to avoid arrest. The woman has expressed a desire to press charges.

🏆 Daytona State Women’s Golf Claims 12th National Title

The Daytona State College women’s golf team has once again made history.

The Falcons captured the NJCAA Division I National Championship on May 14 at Oakwood Country Club in Illinois, edging out defending champion Odessa College by a single stroke. Daytona State finished at +69 over par — just one shot ahead of Odessa’s +70.

Two Falcons, Alana Kutt and Jamie Lowry, earned First Team All-American honors, while head coach Laura Brown was named Championship Coach of the Tournament.

The victory marks the program’s 12th national title, underscoring Daytona State’s dominance on the national stage. College President Dr. Tom LoBasso praised the team’s determination and composure, calling the win an extraordinary accomplishment.

In a tournament decided on the final putts of the final round, the Falcons proved once again that precision matters — especially when one stroke makes all the difference.
