🏠Tuesday's Ormond Beach City Commission meeting drew over 20 residents of The Falls manufactured home community — not to complain about management, but to defend it against what they described as politically motivated attacks on social media. The backdrop: lot rents at the 600-home community on the beachside have climbed sharply under its current ownership, with some residents reporting increases of over 50% since 2022. A group of affected residents has been organizing with the help of Coleen McMahon, a candidate for City Commission Zone 1, who has raised formal complaints with state regulators and amplified their concerns publicly. The residents who spoke Tuesday told a different story — praising their neighbors, their management, and a community they described as home. The city, for its part, can do almost nothing: manufactured home community lot rents fall under exclusive state jurisdiction, and local governments are legally prohibited from regulating them. A state-level mechanism exists to challenge rent increases through mediation, but no cap is on the horizon. Both sides of this story are real. The residents defending their community and the residents struggling to afford it are often neighbors.

💧Ormond Beach held a workshop Tuesday on potable water reuse — the "toilet to tap" debate that has been circling the commission for months — and came out the other side still undecided. Two expert speakers addressed commissioners: a 48-year water industry veteran who urged the city to keep advanced water reuse as a tool for the future, and an environmental consultant who emphasized the rigorous treatment standards involved. The city's own staff confirmed Ormond has sufficient water supply and no current plans to explore potable reuse. Daytona Beach and Edgewater have both voted to put a ban on the November ballot; the county council rejected a similar measure in February. Commissioner Harold Briley and Mayor Jason Leslie both expressed support for letting voters decide. No vote has been scheduled. The debate continues, and the May 5 workshop appears to have informed but not resolved it.

🔥A fire weather watch is in effect for Volusia and Flagler counties from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 7. Temperatures are expected to approach some of the highest readings of the year — a forecast high of 96 in most of Volusia County and 98 in Flagler — combined with winds gusting up to 25 mph and low humidity. Any fire that starts under these conditions will spread fast. Outdoor burning is not recommended. Keep vehicles off dry grass, dispose of cigarettes carefully, and make sure any fires or grills are fully extinguished with water. Rain chances improve Thursday evening and into the weekend as a front moves through, with 30–40% chances of showers arriving after 2 p.m. Thursday and continuing into the weekend.

✈️Spirit Airlines shut down for good on May 2, leaving more than 4,000 Florida workers without jobs and a lot of routes without service. Breeze Airways is among the carriers moving quickly to fill the gap. Between July and December, Breeze is adding flights from Orlando, Fort Myers, and West Palm Beach to Atlantic City — a market where Spirit handled 99% of all traffic — with one-way fares starting at $89. Vero Beach is getting a new Pittsburgh route in October. Tampa is gaining flights to Cancun and St. Thomas starting in December. JetBlue and Southwest are also expanding Florida routes in the wake of Spirit's collapse. For local travelers, the practical upshot is more options and competitive pricing on routes that had gone quiet. Tickets are available now at flybreeze.com.
