📣 Lori Tolland to Address Citizens for Ormond Beach
Residents looking to stay connected with local leadership will have an opportunity to hear directly from Deputy Mayor Lori Tolland as she headlines the next Citizens for Ormond Beach meeting on Feb. 11 at the Ormond Beach Library. The session, scheduled for 5:30–6:30 p.m., will feature a curated list of questions touching on everything from current city developments to future planning.
Tolland, who has represented Zone 1 since 2022 and is currently running for mayor, is expected to provide insight into ongoing initiatives and emerging community priorities. The public is invited to attend, engage, and learn more about the issues shaping Ormond Beach’s future.
With local elections on the horizon, this event offers residents a timely opportunity to join the conversation and gain perspective straight from the city’s leadership.

🚔 Jury Finds Daytona Beach Man Guilty in 2023 Carjacking Murder
Shifting from civic engagement to courtroom outcomes, a Volusia County jury has found Latravius Jacobs guilty on multiple charges—including first-degree murder, vehicular homicide, carjacking, and burglary of a conveyance—after a three-day trial.
The case stems from a December 14, 2023 incident in which Jacobs stole a vehicle from a Daytona Beach motel parking lot. Just minutes later, he sped through a red light at Mason and Ridgewood Avenue at 91 mph, causing a violent crash that claimed the life of the victim. Prosecutors Ashley McCarthy and Paiton Mizelle successfully tried the case, with Judge Kathryn Weston scheduled to issue sentencing on Feb. 9.
The verdict brings a measure of closure to a case that deeply affected the community and underscores the critical work of local law enforcement and prosecutors.
Now, we move from legal decisions to legislative ones as Daytona Beach takes a stance on a major water-use issue.

🚱 Daytona Beach Stands Firm Against “Toilet-to-Tap” Proposal
In a unanimous 7–0 decision, the Daytona Beach City Commission made clear its opposition to the use of blackwater—wastewater from toilets—in the city’s potable water system. Commissioners directed City Attorney Ben Gross to draft an ordinance supporting a countywide charter amendment that would prohibit blackwater reuse and aquifer injection.
The ordinance, expected to return for approval on Feb. 18, would reinforce the Volusia County Council’s plan to place the amendment on the 2026 ballot. Commissioners Ken Strickland and Stacy Cantu urged the city to formally signal its stance, with Cantu stressing that while such a practice may not be imminent, residents deserve a vote.
One resident noted the broader implications, reminding commissioners that aquifers do not stop at city borders—meaning one city’s decision affects many.
With water quality addressed, the week’s final story turns to roadway safety following a tragic local incident.

🚨 Speed Suspected in Holly Hill Crash That Killed Two
A devastating multi-vehicle crash in Holly Hill on Feb. 5 claimed the lives of two people, including a pedestrian, after an accident at the intersection of Flomich and Ridgewood avenues. Officers arriving on scene encountered multiple victims with life-threatening injuries, and first responders immediately initiated life-saving measures. The injured were transported to Halifax Health Medical Center, but two individuals later died.
Preliminary findings indicate that speed may have been a contributing factor. The Holly Hill Police Department continues to investigate and is asking witnesses or anyone with information to contact them at 386-248-9475.
The incident serves as a somber reminder of the ongoing need for roadway awareness and safety efforts throughout the region.
