Volusia County

📜📜The UF/IFAS Extension Volusia County has a strong lineup of community programs running through the end of April and into May — covering everything from buying your first home to understanding what's happening beneath the surface of the Indian River Lagoon. Here's what's coming up:

Home Maintenance Course — April 27 (DeLand, 3–5 p.m.)

🐮🐮A new market opened in South Daytona this weekend that warrants a visit if you've been looking for an alternative to conventional grocery shopping. Winola Farms, which previously operated out of a smaller Port Orange location, has moved into a 12,000-square-foot space at 1854 S. U.S. 1, South Daytona — and the product philosophy is clear from the moment you walk in. No artificial dyes. Minimal seed oils. Meats sourced from the owners' own Pennsylvania farm, along with game options including elk, bison, and wild boar. The scratch kitchen turns out everything from beef tallow chips to sourdough cinnamon rolls and rotisserie chickens raised without hormones or antibiotics. A resident baker handles the bread program. For those who want to make an afternoon of it, a Sip and Shop option with cold beer and wine kicks in after 11 a.m. daily.

🐄🐄And finally, a story that starts with a paralyzed cow and ends with 50,000 hoodies. In 2012, Port Orange accountant Cathy Bair founded the Boo Boo Cow Foundation after her beloved farm animal — given up for lost after a difficult birth — defied the odds and walked again. Bair had promised herself she'd pay the good fortune forward, and she did: by launching a nonprofit that purchases and donates sweatshirts to school children who can't afford them. The foundation crossed the 50,000 sweatshirt milestone in 2025, serving 86 Volusia County schools and 18 in Lake County last year alone. Bair and her husband fund the operation with help from her accounting clients. Donations can be made directly through the Boo Boo Cow Foundation Facebook page or by calling 386-426-4353. It is, by any measure, a very good story.
