🌊 Lifeguards Urge Vigilance After Tragic Beach Weekend

Volusia County Beach Safety reported 62 ocean rescues between May 23 and May 25, with no drownings. Lifeguards credited strong staffing levels and even a favorable longshore current that helped push swimmers out of dangerous rip currents.

Still, the weekend was marked by tragedy after a 2-year-old girl was struck by a vehicle on the beach near East Seventh Avenue. Authorities believe the child ran into the traffic lane. The investigation remains ongoing.

Deputy Chief A.J. Miller reminded beachgoers that parts of the shoreline function as a “county governed highway,” urging families to stay alert — both in the water and when crossing traffic lanes.

More than 21,000 vehicle entries were logged over the holiday weekend. With high rip current risks continuing, officials are encouraging swimmers to stay near lifeguard towers and remain aware of their surroundings.

💎 The Pocket Jeweler Begins a New Chapter

After 13 years in downtown Ormond Beach, The Pocket Jeweler has officially changed hands — but it’s staying local.

Owners Scott and Shannon McLeish have sold the business to longtime Volusia master bench jeweler Abiud Rivera, who brings more than 40 years of industry experience to the storefront.

The McLeishes, who opened the shop in 2013, said finding a community-minded buyer was key. Rivera, who has spent three decades working in Volusia County jewelry stores, had long admired the shop and its name — a nod to selling jewelry “out of your pocket.”

Under Rivera’s leadership, the store will continue its retail focus while expanding custom jewelry services. He’ll operate the shop alongside his wife and daughter, blending craftsmanship with family roots.

For downtown Ormond Beach, it’s less a goodbye and more a thoughtful passing of the torch.

🎓 Seniors Return for a ‘Full Circle’ Celebration

Across Ormond and Daytona area elementary schools, graduating seniors recently walked familiar hallways one more time during annual Senior Clap Out celebrations.

Former students returned to schools including Ormond Beach, Tomoka, Pine Trail, Pathways, Beachside and Champion Elementary, greeted by cheering children and proud teachers holding handmade signs.

For many, the moment felt bittersweet. Seabreeze High School senior Tahla Bibik described the experience as nostalgic — a reminder of how far they’ve come since kindergarten.

Principals shared words of encouragement, emphasizing patience, respect and empathy as students head into their next chapters. For Tomoka Elementary principal Julie Roseboom, retiring after 40 years in education, this year’s clap out carried special meaning.

The events serve as inspiration not only for graduating seniors, but also for the youngest students watching — a tangible reminder of the journey from elementary school to commencement stage.
