Volusia County Schools will bring in outside counsel to investigate a district employee’s complaint against a School Board member. The board unanimously approved Brown Law & Consulting for the investigation, with attorney services billed at $300 per hour. Details remain limited while the investigation is open, though School Board member Krista Goodrich said the employee described the matter as an “ethical violation.” Goodrich supported outside counsel because the district attorney represents both the School Board and district, raising concerns about impartiality. Board member Donna Brosemer, meanwhile, questioned the investigation’s scope and potential taxpayer cost. Officials could not provide an estimate for how long the investigation will take or its final price tag.

🚔 Three Juveniles Arrested After Ormond Beach Shooting

Ormond Beach police have arrested three juveniles accused of firing multiple rounds into a Woodmere Circle residence early Sept. 7. Officers responding around 4:07 a.m. discovered a bullet fragment lodged between panes of glass, a bullet hole and numerous spent casings along the roadway. Investigators said the incident was connected to a prior drug-related dispute involving the resident’s child and the juveniles. The Ormond Beach Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Unit subsequently identified and located three suspects—one 15-year-old and two 17-year-olds. All three face felony charges, including shooting into a building and aggravated assault. No injuries were reported in the provided account.

🏨 Plaza Resort Faces October Code Deadline

Down the road in Daytona Beach, the long-closed Plaza Resort and Spa is facing another important deadline. Unit owners say they’re still searching for answers nearly four years after the property closed following the 2022 hurricanes. Some continue paying substantial HOA fees despite being unable to use or rent their units, while owners described portions of the resort as gutted. The property also faces code violations involving signage, graffiti, landscaping, a retaining wall and general maintenance. The owner is already being fined $500 per day over the unrepaired pool. If remaining violations aren’t corrected by Oct. 7, officials said penalties will rise to $1,000 per day, adding more pressure to an already complicated redevelopment situation.

⚖️ Lawsuit Has Strong Ormond Beach Connection

Finally, a new lawsuit centers on a former Ormond Beach jujitsu instructor already serving prison time. Joel T. Gingery, formerly the owner of Trident Jiu Jitsu in Ormond Beach, was convicted in 2024 of sexually battering an 18-year-old student at Halifax Health Medical Center. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison followed by 10 years of probation. The woman has now filed a 40-count lawsuit naming Gingery, Halifax Health, Shands Hospital, the University of Florida Board of Trustees and other entities. The lawsuit alleges negligent security and supervision, among other claims. Gingery’s former Ormond Beach school is also named as a defendant. The University of Florida declined to comment on the pending litigation, according to the report.
